When the BT came into existence back in the late '80's, they were much too fragile fro my liking in the 7Rem Mag. Several years ago Nosler toughened up many of the BT's, including most .30 cals, the 7mm 120, and 150BT's, among others. The 7mm 120BT is very tough. I've shot probably 50 hogs with that bullet out of my 7-08 @3050, and quite a few whitetails. I also managed to kill a couple of big mule deer with the 7mm 150BT and can attest to it's toughness as well. As stated, it is not bonded, and often times it will shed it's lead core, which only adds to the internal damage inflicted. This is exactly how Nosler designed them to perform, and they do.
That being said, I'm a huge fan of the accubond, and partition for that matter. |

Well I have seen a hornady spire point 139 grain out of a 7 mag do the same thing way back when I was in college. Deer dropped DRT. My buddy slipped it in behind the shoulder, deer was quartering away. What a mess. The Supreme's, the effective box, left a 6 foot or longer blood spatter trail on the exit. I don't see that now. But that was an old box. Maybe I had one that was before they toughened them up. It has really vexed me that I don't get the results I used to get.
Part of me likes that, very rapid expansion and fragmenting, as long as the core goes out the other side. I want an exit hole. I shot one deer facing me with the original box and flipped it over backwards. Shooting offhand lefty. Yes I do that. Now Hornady whitetail 150 grain 308 dropped both deer I shot with it DRT. The 140 grain 708 shoots same hole at the indoor range as the Winchester Supreme.

JGR, kinda off the subject, but I recall you posted a pic a year or two ago of a critter with the largest, most destructive exit wound I've ever seen. It was on a pronghorn if I'm not mistaken. It was truly astounding; a level of destruction that I wouldn't have believed had I not seen the pic with my own eyes! What bullet out of what cartridge generated that? I knew Nosler had toughened up their BTs in "non varmint" calibers and bullet weights, but I haven't tried them in years since I started using Accubonds, TTSXs, GMXs, etc. I quit using the BTs in the first place because they wrecked too much meat.

Good memory Ted. That was on an antelope hunt near Tatum, NM. The guy from Louisiana was shooting a 7mm Rem Mag, 139gr SST factory loaded Hornady Superformance. The shot was right at 100 yds. It remains the nastiest exit I've ever seen.
2nd nastiest was a 7mm Rm Mag and 168 VLD Hunting bullets. Shot was at 80 yds. |

Honestly, if I had a choice between my wife catching me looking at that photo or porn, I honestly think I'd pick the latter, as I might have an easier time explaining the porn! Haha! It was unbelievable!

I like a double lung broadside shot, so I don't care if it takes all that out, I kind of want to see that happen. I am going to have to change though, if they toughened up those Ballistic tips, I need something that works like they used to. I mean was like, if I had a deer in my scope, I knew it was down, period. Then new box of same kind of ammo, and NOPE!!
It was so bad I didn't hunt with it for a couple years. I finally shot a deer last year with it. And it ran off. Broadside shot, took heart out. They always got to mess up stuff. I swear.

This was the first big buck I killed with the .284 150BT about 4 years ago. It is a very tough and accurate bullet nowadays.

Hello everyone. New to the forum. Always enjoy 308 vs 7mm discussions, and this one is very friendly. Nice to see that the 308Win is not severely maligned. I have several, and love the cartridge. I like to tinker, and the 308Win for me is great. Currently knee deep in a bullet development project with another forum member (a brilliant bullet designer if I ma say so). We have done the majority of the design development in the 30 cal and tested the bullets in the 308Win platform. Hard to believe but we have a bullet/barrel/powder combination in the 308Win that has a trajectory virtually identical to the 7mmRem mag factory 150 gr ammo. Not to say that the Rem mag would outperform it with heavier bullets but it is fun to have your Beetle run with the stock GTO. It is no wonder that the 708 is as good as it is given the high efficiency of the 308Win cartridge. I will need to get a 7mm barrel to test the 7mm bullets, and I think it will be chambered in a 708.

And 6.5's are ballistically superior to both so if you use that mentality the 260 and Creedmore trumps both the 308 & 7mm-08. The 308 & 7mm-08 are great cartridges and I have a couple of rifles in each caliber, but since I started with the 308 and my most accurate rifle is a 308 it's the winner for me. |
