Well boys, it is nearly October, which mean one thing!
Black Bear Season. Many of you have commented in the past on threads I have started based on this subject. Well this year is no different. I'm packed and ready to go. Sinus infection or not, I will be in the woods within 24 hours and hunting this illusive creature. Two years ago was the closest I have ever been. It had been raining that morning. While hiking I came across a fresh track and scat. The track was dry, among the muddy travelers path from other wildlife in the area. This year, after talking with several locals from the area, I have moved to a different area. Because there a higher traffic area for bears. In addition to moving stand locations, one of our own will be attending me in the woods. 3_tens will also be in the woods with me, so he will also be able to contribute to this thread. I will be posting while out there. There is limited service, but as I come an go, I will update. |

Feeling some what used and abused after climbing in the rugged Ozark
Mtn's. Black Bear hunting with Skylar. Saw a lot of sign but no bears. Here is some sign less than 200 yards from the tent.
Saturday there were what seemed like 60 or more riders carousing on the Mill Creek ATV trail that passed thru the area we were hunting. Beautiful area with Elevation of 2350 ft near the camp on top. Then dropping 697 feet to the creek bottom with elevation of 1653 ft. in only 730 yards of horizontal distance. This was a 7 mile ride for us on the Outlander. In the blind and darkness is closing in. Things are a little slow for us up here. Granted this is one of the nicest weekends we have seen. Anyone who owned an ATV, UTV, or dirt bike was out riding the trails. Some with zero idea that there were bow hunters in the area. Meanwhile Lile and I are waiting on anything with four legs to exit the dense woods of the White Rock Mountain area. On the way out of the food plot area, there was an awesome display of the sunset descending below the mountains.
Once we made it back to our camp, my step dad was kind enough to help track down some firewood, while I located some rocks to fashion up a ring where we could safely have a fire. I have to say, no matter the situation. There is nothing like having a fire in deer camp. Whether it was successful or unsuccessful, fire was one of the greatest discoveries. While I was frustrated with the riders, lack of big game, or the deceiving movements on the ground floor from squirrels arguing with each other. Fire! Calmed me for the evening. I don’t mean to sound sentimental, although while it can be destructive, fire is a great thing. The next morning, we woke up and headed back into the blinds. While there was significantly less traffic on the mountain, there was traffic non the less. This is about when we decided to call it a morning, came back into deer camp and had something to eat. After eating, some afternoon riding was in order, you know for discovery. |

Hunting or fishing.... The fun is in the doing!!! Harvesting is just an added bonus!

Sadly I left Arkansas empty handed on the harvest end. But, we did have a lot of fun. Just like Bud said, anytime you are out hunting and fishing, it is better than being couped up at home.
Here's a couple more pics from the trip. Lile, just north of where you were I found another pond with and tree stands. I think that is a sweetheart of a location. I will be going back to that area. |

Concluded the hunt last Wednesday morning.
After everything settled from all the four wheeler's running around, everything decided to stay bedded down or nocturnal. While I thoroughly enjoyed the weather and hunting up there, it was disappointing not to see anything. I discovered on the way home, that Bear season in Zone one where we were had closed. Next time it opens up will be in November for Rifle Season. However Zone two is still open. May try it again in that area. I need to start studying maps and looking for trails. |
