looking for an informal bench rifle to help enjoy my retirement, what do you guys think of Remington's 5r mil spec gen 2 in 308?

I think they are awesome. I've seen a few and they all have been VERY accurate.

Excellent factory rifles.
Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

The 5Rs have always been a great value.  For the range crowd, they were under-appreciated due to few cosmetic differences; but for shooters, the barrels make them a bargain.

The gen2 has a few new bells-n-whistles, but the value is still in the barrel.

Out of the box, they are good to go.  You might want a different trigger, Remington's triggers have never been a strength.

No compliant af the Remmy, but I would be remiss if I didn't bring up the Ruger Precision rifle! Bang for the buck, they stand out too! Forgive me Sylvia, Black Betty and others!

For strictly a bench gun I'd look at a few options.  The 5R's are great but others are in there too.

The Tikka t3 Sporter or tikka tactial would be a good shooter

The FN SPR's are spooky accurate as well

The new Ruger Precision is getting good reviews as well.

Also some nice deals on steyr out there on the SSG

Thanks guys, those are all excellent choices but yesterday I was in Ilion NY visiting my wife's folks and as I drove by the Remington factory, called the "Arms" by locals, I heard the faint voice of a 700 5r calling out, Sam i'm lonely, buy me....😂

I have a customer that I sell hunting boots to that's right around the corner from the " Arms " and he has friends in the custom shop. He got me a visit that was very interesting. I have a model 7MS from the custom shop.

The gen 1 I had was a kicker but remedied that with a different butt pad. Very accurate out of the box.

I'd really enjoy a tour of the Arms.
Reaction time is a factor...

I was told that after 9/11, tours have become all but impossible. But I think you can still visit the museum on the first floor.
