Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight
Swarovski Z5 3.5-18X44 Anyone use this combination? Which ring/base are you using? I've tried Leupold STD Low and it's a great height but my bolt catches the focus ring when ejecting a shell. Had to use a medium and now the scope sits too high. Short of adding a cheek pad or something is there a ring out there that is just slightly higher than the lows? I checked burris and their heights are the same. Talley might have an option but I've heard some mixed reviews about them so am interested to hear other options that might be available. I'm also not interested in paying $400 for some rings and bases. |

Many of use love Talley mounts on this site. I use them on several very heavy kickers and have had zero issues.
I had low Talleys one piece mounts on a Browning with a Swaro Z6 30mm tube and 42mm objective. 60 degree bolt lift. I never had an issue hitting the eye piece. I think the Weatherby is 54 degrees. So they may work for you. |

I have the Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight in 338-06 with the Swarovski Z6 1.7-10x42 and use Talley low scopemounts. Great set up for the Weatherby stock. My scope has lens caps on them and still has room.

I almost had a 338-06 once. One I've always wanted. It got melted.

Like the OPs, it is one of Weatherby's Ultra Lightweight. Still in their catalog but my particular caliber got dropped in ~2008. Mine weighs in less than 6 1/2lbs with scope and ammo.
Great mountain rifle that is welcome addition when humping the mountains around here. Downside is the pencil thin fluted barrel. Nice for the weight reduction but prolongs any range session. Barrel gets hot quick and you can see the groups opening up after a few rounds. 338-06 in this platform is right on the edge. I'm not recoil sensitive and enjoy shooting my 340 Wby and 375 H&H, in moderation. The 338-06 has the typical push of a non-magnum rifle, but in this lightweight rifle, I can handle about a box of ammo before calling it a day. 338-06 is a great all around North America game caliber. I prefer 210gr Barnes TTSX but definitely a reloader's cartridge and I flip between necking up 30-06 cases or using my 338-06 brass. Ammo is available from a number of custom reloaders, Nosler and PCI with prices ranging from $2.30 to over $4.00 per round.

Nice. I've wanted a 338-06 for quite some time. Had a Winchester Model 70 30-06 barreled action in to be modified to 338-06 in Dec 2011. Someone broke in to the shop and stole 4 50BMGs and set the shop on fire... with over 30000 rounds of 50cal and 20mm in storage. Destroyed over $1M worth of CNC machines... completely put the guys out of business. My Model 70 and a 20mm rifle were molten metal. FD did not even attempt to put it out. Said it was the hottest burning fire they had ever seen... in Tampa, Fl. The debt just got paid off this year and business is starting up again. They lost a lot.

What a way to lose a rifle and someone to lose their business. Good to hear they are rebounding.
I'm sold on the 338-06. As I get older, shooting the magnum calibers is just not something I do much anymore. 340 Wby is on its way out and the 375 H&H is sticking around for nostalgic reasons. I've rebarreled a couple of Savage 110s in 338-06 that were good shooters and had one that someone built on a Mauser action, but keep coming back to the Weatherby. Supertool hooked me up with the Z6 glass and it is a great combination. The PCI 225gr ammo shot inside of 1.5" out of the rifle but working up a load. My previous Wby Ultra Lightweight shot inside of 3/4" with their factory 210gr Nosler ammo. Good luck with your hunt for your 338-06. They are definitely out there. Cooper has a number of them, but pricey. If you are patient, the Weatherby Ultra Lightweight can be had for under $1200 based on recent sales on GB and rebarreled Savages, Remingtons and Winchesters for $300 less. If I hadn't fallen in to this Weatherby, I was just planning on finding a donor rifle and getting it rebarreled.
