So I'm hoping to pick up an SWFA 3-15x42 this week. I was wanting to get some flip covers for it. I hear horror stories about the BC ones breaking, so I was looking into the Vortex Defender caps.
I'm trying to figure out which size I need for the objective. I would think it would be this one (44 objective one): http://swfa.com/Vortex-Defender-Flip-Cap-Objective-P89915.aspx based on the measurements of the SWFA scope's exterior front diameter, but I saw a message posted on this board long ago saying the 44 was too big. But never saw any other verification or if the 40 fits. Anyone have experience using Vortex Defender caps on a SS scope? What do you use?

I cannot comment on the Vortex caps - they sure are at an appealing price point. If you really want to get the last caps you ever have to buy - and are willing to pay for them, the following are more than worth it - I have 3 sets and have no regrets - buy once, cry once. http://shop.aadmount.com/Flip-Up-Cap-Set-SWFA-SS-3-15X42-Tactical-CAPS-SWFA-3-15.htm These things are bomb proof and have a lifetime warranty. As long as Jon makes them for a scope I need them for, he'll get my money. That said, only you can decide if the cost is worth it. In my case, I got damn tired of replacing the junk butler creek caps.

I've heard really good things about the AADMOUNT ones. The only downside is the price point. If I was getting a $1000+ scope I think I'd go straight for those. But I've heard good things about the vortex and the price is reasonable so I'd like to give them a shot. Those AADMOUNT ones sure do look nice though!

I totally hear what you are saying. I thought about trying the Vortex caps for a Viper 2-7 I have on a .22. However the size of one end of the scope has changed from what Vortex currently puts out and they wouldn't fit - so this scope still wears breakable butler creeks. Now if Vortex would roll out a wider range of caps, I may be tempted to try a set on my next SS scope. However, ordering caps that "may be close enough" to fit, then finding out they don't.............. I don't want to mess around with that, as my time is worth something, as is return shipping. My next SS will wear Aadmounts because each set is made for a particular scope, so they fit like they are supposed to, and I've yet to hear of anyone breaking a set. If they have, I'm confident they've been replaced. Good luck in your search Sir! Hope you get your gear set up the way you want it and it works for ya. Happy shooting!

Thanks very much! Now I'm wondering if I should just go for a cheap bikini cover for awhile and decide later haha.
Happy shooting to you as well!

In the right environment and with proper placement, bikini covers can be quite functional… even cheap ones...

I really like these - they are cheap and they work. Have 5 or 6 of them for various sized scopes. |

Skylar,
Will those same caps fit a SS 3-9X42? |

I'm not 100% certain because the outside dimensions differ. I would have to double check it.

I have a couple of these and like them for hunting scopes. [/QUOTE] With good caps on, I find myself using the neoprene covers mainly as protection for the entire scope when I have them in my safe. It never fails, the rifle you want is never right in front. |
