Hi what do you guys recommend for a SOCOM II? I have an astigmatism so most red dots look like a cluster.
Thanks! |

What will be the primary use of the rifle?

I had a SOCOM for awhile, it was the model without the continuous rail. Does yours have the rail running from rear sight assembly to just aft of the gas system? Or do you have the rail covering just the fore end?
That makes a huge difference when trying to scope it. Are you looking for a magnifying scope or a red dot? Do you have the gun now or are you getting it? What will be the primary and any secondary uses of the gun?

I love the M14 platform. I have owned three, and there is likely a SOCOM in my future - so please understand that what I'm about to say is by no means an attack on your rifle.
An M1A (and probably a SOCOM) can be a bit of a challenge to scope effectively. There are a few reasons for this:
#1. If you don't have the model with the rail that extends all the way over the action, you will need a scope mount. Most mounts for the M14/M!A family of rifles are less than great - and even the good ones need to be carefully installed - preferably by someone that knows M14's. You don't need a gunsmith...just someone that knows this rifle's quirks. #2. The recoil impulse on an M14 is....different. The main recoil (rearwards) is nothing to worry about - after all, it's a heavy .308 gas gun. What is a challenge for some scope to tolerate is the forward impulse that is generated when the op rod and bolt run forward and come to a sudden stop. That results in a short, sharp forward shock. #3. M14 scope mounts tend to generate a "chin weld" instead of a "cheek weld" due to the geometry involved. For these three reasons, when I purchase my next rifle from the M14 family, it will be a 16" barrel, an I will put a long eye relief optic into a scout mount. My personal choice is an aimpoint that has a 2X magnifier (I know, strange and unusual animal....but it works) This also dovetails well with my intended purpose...which is shopping for bacon during the hours of darkness. |

If you want an M1, cool, great gun; if you want a scoped 308, get an AR10 - or plan for some headaches.
I had a socom, got rid of it due to scoping challenges. |
