Greetings; I am no stranger to the AR platform out to 700 yards; but I am new to precision bolt. I have the rifle, and here are my three options for glass: IOR Valdada 10x42, Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10, and Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20. Only occasionally, rarely, will I shoot to 1,000 yards, and it will be used for banging steel only, maybe a competition or two. Most likely range will be 300-700 yards. Of these three choices given how I will be shooting, what is the better option? Thanks!! |

Edit title: Should read Leupold Mark 4. I am seriously under-caffeinated today.

So...before I answer, why those 3? And how are your final 3 so dissimilar?
What caliber rifle? |

Great questions. I am used to 10x. The IOR gets a lot of love (as does the SWFA 10x HD, which could be an option). I have shot the Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20; it has a lot of magnification, more than I need, but I can get a good deal on it. I chose the Mark 4 3.5-10 as a middle ground. Rem .308. |

Personally I would pick either the SWFA 10xHD, the 3-9x HD or the 5-20x HD. Those 3 are better scopes than the comparables that you listed.

My 308 AR wears a 2.5-10 and it is a good fit. I have said many times that I am no fan of scopes>20X, they are simply too picky to get behind - and especially in unconventional shooting positions. I too would stick with something in the 3-10X range unless it will be exclusively a range gun and always from a very well supported position.
On the IOR10X vs SS10X, no question, SS. IOR's can be hit-n-miss with quality and customer service, SWFA is hit-n-miss with neither. Also, I like the turrets more on the 10XHD, glass is comparable, and prices are similar. If you want a bit more mag, there is an S3-15X also. It is not HD glass and doesn't have the newest turrets, but it is serviceable and a very good deal. Lastly, and a bit antiquated, I know: I am no fan of Leupold, their offering was too expensive and too crappy for too long for me to trust them. I hear they have made huge strides in the past several years, great for them, I'm still no fan of the company.

So, a SS 3-15, while less expensive, is a better scope than the Leupold Mark 4 (in either configuration)?

And given my intended application (target shooting, maybe some competition) the 10X HD or the 3-15 FFP?

Competition, definitely a variable. Nothing sucks more than shoot-n-move and losing your target because you have too much magnification. For bench, 10X is fine, for movement, it is way too much.
And I haven't run those Leupolds, but I have run Leupolds, and I'd take an SS any day. To those still spinning Leupolds turrets, do you still have to spin past and come back to it, else the adjustment is wrong? |
