whats your thoughts on using the LC 223 brass
found at the range.one day I picked up 250 pieces of it..is it true you have to use a lighter loader than with other brass? I know I have to swage the primer pockets.thanks for any other advice..rizzo |

LC or Lake City brass is good brass. It is military brass so, it is thicker with slightly less capacity. So yes, you will need to start low and work up your loads.

Picking up brass at the range can be problematic. You never know if the brass has been reloaded or not. It could be that the brass has been reloaded multiple times and the shooter has left it because signs of problems are occurring. The added time to inspect and prep the brass has lead me away from picking up brass unless I know the shooter that left it. Everything shiny is not gold.

What 3_tens said.
Plus Federal now runs the Lake City facility, Federal makes the American Eagle line which has a thinner case head than most other brands. Just saying |

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

Also, Lake City brass has a crimp around the primer pocket that needs to be cut or swagged out.

I bought 2000 once fired cases when Obama got elected. You will have to remove the crimp, I used an RCBS kit for my rock chucker.
My advice, get, if you don't have one, a 223 case gauge and a worlds fastest trimmer. Resize and decrimp, and then run through the trimmer. Once I had loaded cases, I dropped each one in the case gauge to see if it would fit or not. Those that didn't, I pulled the primer removal rod out of my Lee die and ran the loaded cases back through the die and rechecked. All those that I have done have fired flawlessly in my AR's. Heck even some of the Hornady 308 cases are crimped now.

Lake city used to be preferred stuff. Can buy a case prep center for the pockets and have more functions to use later. Lyman makes a nice one for like 100 bucks.
