That rail does get you down nice and low. The HK STANAG claw blows. That is a nice set up Bigdaddy has.

I used to own one. Something to keep in mind with the PTR 91 rifles and FAL as well is the forward recoil from the bolt slamming home is very hard on scopes. There aren't many out there that can handle it, and I doubt the Nikon scopes would. I fired probably 500 rounds through mine and managed to break three different scopes(nikon buckmaster was one). Only one that held up was a cheap fixed 4X for air rifles. If I had the rifle now would mount a 6X42 ss, I think that would be a good fit but opinions vary I guess.
For the ring height I had to use mediums, all the scopes used were around 40 mm objectives. It puts the scope up pretty high. Accuracy I got from mine was around 1.5-2 moa with ball ammo. I fired a box of federal gmm and wasn't much better so stuck with the ball ammo. I kinda miss it, it was a fun rifle to plink with.

Actually was considering the 6x SS and some super low rings..... want to fire it with irons a bit first... then try my SS 3-9 on it before ordering a 6x for it though.

A SS 1-6x would be sweet setup to IMO

only issue I foresee on that ST is the charging handle lifts up and back. I put my SS1-4 on there with the borbo mount and when charging it came close to interfering/hitting with the dial on the left side the scope if you try to manipulate to quick you'll hit with your hand. want to try to keep the left side clear of any objects to protect them and my hand when charging. |

I actually have 2 HK-91/G3 style rifles. One is a Springfield SAR-8 Sporter (Receiver from
Greekfactory, Springfield parts, thumbhole stock period import) and a CETME (Century arms build on original Spanish parts). The CETME is the ancestor of the G3, built for Spain in the late 50s.
Both of mine have the standard Stanag mounting points on the receiver, which use a claw mount and raise the scope for pass through for the irons. There are no bolt catch clearance issues either. I didn't shoot mine enough to notice scope issues/break the 10x Habicht Nova (samplelist) I put on it. The sites are a fixed front post and a rotating rear diopter with 4 positions: 1 is a v-notch for CQB, 2-4 are apertures for 200, 300, 400. Impact is identical for 30M and 200M with 145-150 NATO ball. I never reloaded or saved brass from those rifles. I don't think the breech is half as abusive as the deflector which can noticeably stave in the casing while sending them 5-10 yards forward at a 30 degree angle. I do not recommend sitting on the right side benches at the range with plywood separators. Accuracy will be dependent on how you like the trigger. This is a 50-60s era battle rifle designed by Germans so it isnt exactly glass rod territory. I ended up sending my SAR-8 trigger group to Williams for modification. Once to lighten it up, then a second time (like he told me everyone does) to get a set trigger installed. 10 years ago we were awash in cheap steel and aluminum 20 round magazines for them. I don't know what prices are now. You don't need many. I actually prize the 5 round mag I found somewhere, the aluminum next and the steelies can always be used as impromptu clubs. So someone wants a PSG-1? Well don't expect anything south of 10K unless its beat to crap. Oh, and also look out for any "PSG-1" on the market with fixed sites. That is a SR-9/9T/9TC. It was also pretty easy to buy PSG-1 parts (stock, grip, trigger) and trick up your 91 a few years ago. Edited by HKtoTikka - October/12/2017 at 05:41 |

A good friend has an H+K 91 with a PSG1 trigger group. He has a fixed 4 power Leupold M8 on it in a side mount. Last I knew the scope was still holding up. Not sure of the round count on the scope. His has the fluted chamber. He shoots bulk ball ammo from it . Often from his boat. He likes it because he NEVER has to clean up any brass on the boat when shooting it. He gets 2 moa or slightly better accuracy with his. And I've watched him consistently hit clay pigeons stood up on the 200 meter back stop . Offhand. When he was younger, he could do that with the iron sights. He's had and shot the rifle for almost 30 years. And other than super scrappy ammo. I don't know of it ever failing him. When he got it, it was in new condition. But he has taken care of it by and large.
He put the short butt stock back on it and shoots it 90% from off hand with a fairly heads up position. Imho they are a good rifle that will last and work for a Long long time. So its worth figuring out. |

The stock profile on these makes it VERY hard to find a proper mount and optic that will work with most folks...the drop on it is just so steep (the stocks used to be called "cheek crushers!" If you want to mount an optic, I would first suggest going with a Spuhr G3 stock--this puts the shooter's eye in line with the optic, and makes the rifle MUCH more controllable.
