I'm thinking about getting a used one of these for my Ruger .243 M77 Mark II Ultralight, as the rifle itself is not that big. I had a Leupy FX-II Ultralight scope once but the eye box was like looking thru a straw. Just wondering if this scope is the same or more generous ike the rest of their scopes. Thanks.

Not sure about that Leupy, but on my wife's (similar) Ruger Compact rifle, we put a Swaro Z3 3-9X36. It's great and (more importantly) she loves it.

I have one on a .44 mag Ruger 96 and it's just about right. Look at the VX2 2-7x33 as an option. Or if you can find a used Kahles AH 2-7x36 (imo probably the best 2-7 ever made) that's what my M77 RSI .308 has on it.

The 1.75-6x32 is a more user friendly scope than the ultralight. Depending on how much you are willing to spend, you should also look at Vortex Razor HD LH 1.5-8x32. that is probably the best tweener currently on the market.

I know - I had that same scope with the 4A reticle on my ML. Sold it in favor of a Zeiss Duralyt 2-8x42 with a 30mm tube. Nice scope but it looks like a ball bat on my ML.

I have two VX3 1.75-6x scopes. One is on my muzzleloader and the other is on my .30-30. I personally love the scopes and find them to be about perfect for woods hunting. Where I hunt it's not uncommon to have animals sneak up within 10-20 yards before you really know they are there. At these ranges the humongous field of view at 1.75x is really, really helpful. At longer ranges there's nothing I can't kill with 4x out to the ballistic and accuracy potential of the two guns I have my 1.75-6's on.

Winner winner chicken dinner. I just bought this Vortex Razor in mint condition off the Fire for $415 shipped. At 11" long and weighing 13.4 ounces I think this smaller scope will work out great on my Ruger Ultralight. Thanks.

I have 2 Ruger compacts. One wears a Nikon Monarch UCC 3-9x40 and the other a Zeiss Conquest Duralyt 2-8x42. Neither seems to big for the gun.
One thing I will say, when you are at the range, especially since I have 2 scopes now that dial up to 15 or 16X, a 3-9 sure doesn't make a target look very big. I would think a 6x would be worse. |

6X at the range doesn't make the target look big at all, but it really isn't needed to shoot accurately anyway. At the range your shooting at a symmetrical circular bull in a symmetrical duplex reticle. You can optically center the target with the reticle and even if the thicker hunting grade crosshairs completely cover up the x ring you can shoot sub MOA groups and get the gun sighted in. For hunting purposes, I wouldn't want to use above 6x below 400 yards anyway because I'm not trying to hit eyeballs but rather kill zones and I am trying to do it quickly and efficeintly. Also after the shot I want to visually track the animal for as long as possible which aids in game recovery. For speed of shooting and tracking game, a wide field of view is way more beneficial than being able to count the hairs on the hide. The easiest way to gain field of view is to lower the magnification which also in turn gives a brighter image (better for low light which hunters shoot a lot in) and makes the image more stable for offhand shooting (better for hunting as well). |
