SHOT is next week, so I am making my schedule of who to visit and what to look at.
I know I will not be able to see every booth, so I have to plan this. Is there anything specific you want me to look at and report on the best I can? ILya

I'd like to know if Leica is going to hit the streets with the 24, 32, and 42mm objective models of their ER5 line, or if they have lost hope on those scopes ever getting to market.

Interested to see what the “New Year, New Gear” campaign Sako has put out brings. Wanting to buy a Bavarian Carbine in .308 but as soon as I did, they’d release something I want more.

Anything specific from Leica and Trijicon that you are wondering about?
I am going to visit everyone who makes an optic, but the things I look at may be different from what you want to find out about. ILya

A quick look at the new VX-Freedom line from leupold would be nice. Just to see what kind of glass they have and how they stack up in the budget world.

I'll go and look, but honestly, VX-Freedom is the least of my concerns. Rifleman, VX-1 and VX-2 are effectively the same scope with a couple of minor cosmetic, coating and turret differences. The basic design is the same thing Leupold has been using for probably close to 40 years and VX-Freedom is likely their attempt to squeeze some more life out of this dinasauer. They cut down on the number of product lines and keep cosmetics consistent since VX-Freedom is is cosmetically similar to the VX3i. As a general rule, all the assorted verbal diarrhea that comes out of various marketing departments (most manufacturers, not just Leupold) can be safely ignored. They routinely come up with all sorts of memorable terminology that means absolutely nothing, like the whole cow manure of twilight management, etc. It will be a perfect scope for people who want to show off having Leupold on their rifle and for people who shoot twice a year: check zero before hunting season then fire a shot at a deer a couple of times. If you are looking for a budget scope, it is perfectly acceptable, although modern design from the Phillipines seem to offer more for the money (things like Sig Whiskey3, Vortex Diamondback HP, etc). This is sort of at the core of my love/hate relationship with Leupold. Their new stuff is really good: VX-6HD, VX-5HD, Mark 8, D-EVO, etc. However, on their lower end scopes, they insist on reusing designs that roamed the earth together with the dinosaurs. ILya

That may be excessive. They do make a lot of nice stuff, and they have been quite creative. I am sure that will make it into the key end of their product line as well. ILya |

Hey, if you get by IWI, see if they have their new 308 bullpup out yet, and what you think of it.

I'd be interested in seeing any new scopes with illuminated reticles in the mid price range that are suited toward hunting.

What is mid-afternoon price range to you?
There are reverberations that Meopta will have a big year, so that should be interesting. ILya |
