Get two zoom lenses:
Sigma 18-35 F/1.8 for indoor use Sigma 50-100 F/1.8 for portraiture and other moderate telephoto Then later when you go hiking and all, for good light use get Tamron 18-400 zoom. The two Sigma lenses are large and heavy, but have amazing image quality. They replace all the standard primes. Tamron 18-400 is not as good in terms of image quality, but is crazy flexible and surprisingly decent in good light. ILya

Ok so not a lot of money for this. I have had no success selling more recently.
Am I right that those are $800-$1000 for the Sigma Lenses each? I am sure they are awesome just not a lot of disposable income for this. I am on a "Sightron" budget.... I can buy the Tamron Lense at $200. What is the loss or trade off. Ok. So here is the kit I have bought. Help me out what am I giving up with the lenses above. I am absolutely new to this please can you give me the 5 minute tutorial or point me to your wisdom that you have posted OT or other sites? I bought a cheap package. I really dont have $1800 for lenses. Here is what I bought again.

Let's start over, then. What is your budget? What kind of pictures do you plan to take?
Can you still return the 50mm lens? IF you really want a 50mm prime for whatever reason, get the much cheaper F/1.8 version. Also, if you can buy the 18-400mm Tamron new for $200, you should do it now. It is a $600 lens that I do not discounted a whole lot. Fair disclaimer: I am in the middle of an experiment I am doing where all of the daily picture taking I do is with a cell phone (albeit a very nice one), and add on lenses from Moment. Modern cellphones take exceedingly nice pictures with minimum of care and an add on telephoto lens makes it a surprisingly decent portrait camera. The Canon you bought takes perfectly decent pictures. However, unless you are really into photography, you will not have the camera with you most of the time when you want to take a picture. Your cell phone on the other hand is always with you and chances are you will take most pictures with that. I do not know which cell phone you have, but it may be worth your while to upgrade if you are using something that is a bit older. Now, with your Canon, there are two things you need to be able to do: -take baby pictures indoors where the light is questionable -take a variety of pictures outdoors where the light is decent, but you have no idea of how far you will be For indoors, you can either get a prime in the 28 to 35 mm range (40-50mm equivalent) with F/1.8 aperture or a 17-50 or thereabouts zoom with F/2.8 aperture. I would recommend Sigma 30mm F/1.4 Art prime or Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 zoom. For general purpose use outdoors, that 18-400mm Tamron is pretty impressive. If you can't swing that, either 16-300mm Tamron or 18-300mm Sigma will do the trick. SIgma is a little sharper from what I have seen. ILya

Thank you for your input thus far.
I have not had time to look at it in detail or review your other suggestions s but as always I did not give you he details you needed. I need to be less than 1k -maybe 1250 all in so I am down to maybe 700... |

Got it.
Sigma 17-50mm F/2.8 currently has a $300 rebate, so it will cost $370 total. Start with that. That's your indoor lens. Sigma 18-300mm has a $180 rebate, so it will run you $400. That's your outdoor lens. That's a bit over your $700 budget, but if you later sell the two lenses that came with your camera, you are within budget. ILya

I agree with Ilya; he's given you very solid advice. And once you learn more about photography, having f/2.8 max aperture capability on the 17-50 will be very much appreciated for low light and subject isolation from the background.

Thank you gentlemen.
Everything went great until 4 or 5 days afterwards when my wife developed postpartum preeclampsia and HELP syndrome and near died. 6 days after that incident she was returned to me in perfect working order. She was given Mag Sulfate to stop the seizure s and to prevent a stroke and is perfect healthy now. The worst part was when I was holding the baby 5 days after she was born and the Doctor asked me if My wife had a living will. I said yes she wills to live now do your Job or we'll get someone who can. He might have seen a face that scared him or scarred him. My mistake. Anywho he ordered some tests and started protocol common to the diagnosis. Baby girl was 13lbs 9 ounces at 8 weeks old and won't let Mom get more than two hours of sleep without depleting the milk supply and feeding 2-3 ounces of the powder stuff... I have been absent as my new job requires much dedication. Not like KB but more than I wish... Hope to have some more time to socialize on here not likely as the camera is to catch the moments I miss. |

Not the 60mm F 2.8 That was a copy error.
I also have the 50MM Canon 1.2 Which is in my top so far. It was the first one I received and the first one I captured some pics with that are already on the wall. Since I have purchased Lr, Ps, Br, Ai. Is there a better way to convert than Br? Lightroom is AWESOME , long way from paint and early Photoshop. Wish I could post I do not have a photo host site waiting on the OT to get back up. The 17-50 seems the most versatile so far for out and about. Hope to use the 10-20 for some group stuff and some distortion when I sell the house and make everything look bigger wider and better than what it is... The 105 is sick with detail on skin and feet and little peach fuzz on a babies head. Can't wait to get it outside and get some colors. Trying to sell more to get the 50-100 f 1.8 Art that was suggested.

You bought some really nice lenses, Steve! You have a lot of bases covered with what you have. You mentioned coming to Texas. If you are planning to do so, maybe we could meet up and combine hunting and photography over a weekend. I could show you some techniques with your new camera gear and post-processing with LR.
Right now, the best advice I can give you is to learn everything you can about aperture settings and the effects of a wide vs stopped down aperture and their effects on exposure and depth of field. Don’t rely on your camera’s “auto” setting. Shoot in either aperture priority or manual modes. You will learn the most the fastest by doing so. Also, shoot in RAW format so you have the greatest control over the final look of your photos in post. |

Steve, I strongly suggest you take up Ted on his offer. I am a consummate camera geek, but he is a much better photographer than I am.
My original recommendation remains: keep one lens on the camera for a bit (17-50 would be my recommendation) and take pictures. Then get them into Lightroom and group by focal length. I bet you will find 85% of your pictures are taken at a couple of specific focal lengths where the composition appeals to you. ILya
