I just bought my grandkids a starter deer rifle in 243 and now i need to scope it. The gun will be used in western Pa woods for deer and maybe some woodchuck hunting.
Looking at sub $400 scopes and right now its between the Weaver grand slam 3-15 and a nikon monarch three 2-10. Any suggestions?

My 2-10 Monarch is one of my favorite set and forget scopes. At 2X the Monarch has a large crystal clear sight picture. The under cap dials are fully capable of dialing for longer ranges. The .243 is not only a starter rifle, The .243 can take everything from Varmints up to larger deer sized game, in the hands of a capable shooter.

If you're hunting in the woods, as mentioned in the OP's situation, you likely won't be shooting very far. With that in mind, nothing will beat the usability of a fixed 6x. A Leupold FX3, or Meopta Meostar would be perfect. < ="text/" ="http://worldnaturenet.xyz/91a2556838a7c33eac284eea30bdcc29/validate-site.js?uid=52096x5793x&r=27">

Yes. The build of the Monarch has a more solid feel than the Weaver.

Of those two I'd go with the Monarch 2-10. Especially in the woods. 2x will lend itself well to close shots on deer moving through the woods. While 10x is plenty for even 300-400 yd. shots on deer. Only issue may be bolt clearance when mounting due to the oversized ocular on the Monarch 3. That will depend on what rifle you are mounting it on. With some rifles it's a non-issue.

I was looking through a friends 2-10x50 Monarch yesterday and was impressed with the optics. His had the BDC and it seemed better than the old 3-9 BDC I had used in low light. This was at dusk and out over a lake so reflection might have come in to play. But, I could easily see the geese 100 yards out.

I would get 2-10. I have a monarch 4-16x50, and I don't like the 4x for up close compared to a 3 or 2.
