I just got a pair of Nikon Monarch 7s (8X40) for birding. I thought these were going to be a major upgrade, but I have an unexpected problem. When I look at, say a tree limb with a white sky behind it, the limb appears to be traced in magenta and green. That is, the upper edge of the darker limb are a vivid magenta, and the lower is a vivid green, as if they'd been drawn in like a cartoon. I can tell looking at the lenses that these colors correspond to the coatings, so that has to be the issue. This is making me mistake the colors on birds as well.
What could be causing this? is this a usual thing or a defect? Something Nikon would fix? I got the things new, but on ebay. SMN

The coatings have very little to do with the colors you're describing. You are describing classical Chromatic Aberration—and if you're not overly sensitive—LOTS OF IT. That is a problem with lens design and can be especially troubling for those trying to identify birds by, often subtle, differences in color.
You should read up on chromatic aberration. And welcome to this forum. Cheers, Bill |

Sorry, probably. When I started my message, you had yet to post one.

Thanks for that diagnosis.
I'll have to read more about it. It's strange: I've used many different binoculars before this without ever seeing an effect like this. It makes these binoculars almost unusable imo. And that really surprises me because I'd heard really good things about this model. Any chance it's just a defect on this pair?

180506 Hi, Steven: All but the insanely expensive binoculars exhibit CA; some far more than others. You will notice it as badly as shown in Ed’s example in the only poorest instruments. However, when trying to distinguish between two species of birds separated by 1.5 HUES (as opposed to colors) even an aberration half that bad would be maddening. The problem can be adequately addressed with $$$$ and can be corrected with $$$$$$—through exotic glass types, additional elements, aspheric elements, or a combination of some, or all, of the above. Dig in; you will make mistakes. But, that’s part of the game. The attached graphic may be helpful. BillPS Sorry; no attachment. Although it was a simple, SMALL jpg, this idiot program says it can't find it. Bless its little digital heart. |

if you are looking for a nice, inexpensive pair of binos, try these.

Steven: I failed to mention, those AR coatings have no color. What appears to be “color” is the wavelength of light they reflect. Intuitive? No. Accurate? Yes. Bill |
