We are wanting to get my father in law a scope for his 30-30 for christmas this year. I know thats a ways off, but I'm cheap and like to shop the sales SWFA always has good black friday deals so thats probably when I'll order it, try get him most bang for buck. typical 30-30 use, short range deer gun. If it was me I'd do like 1-4, he would probably like more 2-7, 3-9 though I'm guessing. . Any suggestions? I was thinking vx3i 2.5-8x36 |

NO reason to put a "tactical scope" on a dirty 30.... a low power variable will do sufficient 2-7 or 3-9 would be my choice. Just watch the sales. The new leupold freedom line has a couple options that would fit the bill. I put a vortex diamond back 2-7 on my cousins 30-30 and he's been happy with it.

Weaver Grand Slam 2-8x would be my choice for a magnified optic.

I would just put a fixed 3x or 4x on it.

I have had both a Vortex and a Redfield in a 2-7 and both have been nice scopes. on a deer rifle a 2-7 is a great choice.

Agree, a 2-7 is very nice. The 2.5-8 Leo is nice because it is also compact and doesn't overwhelm a Marlin.

I put a vx1 2-7x33 on mine and love it.
Think the Nikon monarch 2-8 is also a fine option. |

When you consider low magnification variables, it is as well to look at field of view as magnification. Some of these 2-7x might as well be a 3-7x. 40' at 100 yards is a decent minimum if you tend toward a scope that is labeled to start at 2x.

All my Marlin lever guns (.30-30, .35 & .444) have VX-1 2-7x33 Shotgun scopes with Heavy Duplex reticles.
