Got a savage 243 for my sons to use this upcoming deer season, it came with a scope, but I already know from reviews it's junk.....
So, what would be a decent scope to put on it for the money? Or a better choice among the following? Burris Fullfield Nikon Buckmaster Nikon Prostaff Leupold Freedom, VX1 or VX2 Bushnell Elite 3 series Probably looking at a 3-9x40. I have had a burris, it was ok. I have a couple VX1's and they are pretty decent, but think the freedom might be a better option. No idea on the nikons or Bushnell.

I haven't used all of these scopes, but I believe the Burris eyepiece rotates with you adjust the magnification for whatever that's worth. At least the Fullfield I had worked this way.
I have owned the Bushnell as well, and thought it was very good value, but the eye relief wasn't great, not sure on numbers, just my experience hunting with it. I didn't exactly consider these as high end scopes and gave them little thought, just hunted with them. |

From that list, VX-1 or VX-2 all the way.

I wouldn't reccomend the Vortex Diamondback, I owned one for a bit and the eyerelief/eyebox were noticably poor in my experience.
I can only assume that the Vortex crossfire, as a cheaper model, is no better in this regard, though you never know. I do know that these scopes have a reputation for needing warranty, and a local dealer has said they have the highest return rate of any he carries. Though of course, that could be because the much promoted warranty means people return them more than other scopes when they have minor issues.....I couldn't really say. |

I put a diamond back on my cousins 30-30 and it has been an excellent scope. Doesn't have any eyebox or relief issues. his 8 year old daughter used it to harvest her first deer and its held zero over 4-5 seasons of hunting and plinking. Vortex does have one of the best warranties in the business should you ever need it but everyone has different experiences. |

I checked the respective websites and Vortex lists the 3-9x40 diamondback at 3.3" eye relief, while Leupold lists the vx freedom 3-9x40 at 3.66-4.17 (Leupold lists their eye relief numbers this way to reflect the variability based on magnification changes I believe, though I haven't found their eye relief to vary any more than similarly priced scopes)
Now that might not seem a huge difference, and could work just fine, depending on the rifle fit to the individual, but it is worth considering, and in my experience the difference was notable. |

I dropped an older Zeiss Conquest 3-9 that I had onto my daughters rifle for her to start out with, and it's been great -- no complaints whatsoever. In retrospect though, had I to do it over again, I'd probably find a fixed 4x and start her out with that. She (and every other kid I've hunted with) tend to like to crank the variable powers up to max and look "close-up" at chipmunks, squirrels, etc... whenever they get bored. In theory, that should be great practice, but invariably they leave it on 9x so when it's time to find a deer in short order they've hampered themselves with the smallest field of view possible and typically the most unforgiving eyebox… Add a little excitement into the mix and arms that aren't fully conditioned to holding a rifle for very long periods, and it's a recipe for a frustrated kid and no deer spotted. I believe I'd have done my daughter a favor if I put a scope on her rifle that had the same field of view, forgiving eye box, and eye relief every time she shouldered it.

If you can find a Meopta MeoPros 3-9x40 or used Zeiss Conquest, that would be a great option.
Aside from that, I was pretry impressed with the inexpensive Whiskey 3 3-9x I saw not long ago. I also like the Vortex Diamondback. Not a fan of VX-1 at all. VX-2 is better. Havn't seen the Freedom scopes yet. ILya

+3 on the Meopta/Conquest/Cabelas Euro scopes. The Chinese vortex trash pales in comparison.

The Meopta in that power range is nearly two times as expensive as some of the other scopes on this list. At lesst here in Canada where I can find it for $679.00

Sorry, $769.00. That's not really a budget scope and is more expensive than a Leupold VX-3i by a significant margin.

I saw a Sig Whiskey 3 for 119 someplace.......
Don't want to step up to a Zeiss or Meopro for their gun. If I found a good deal on a used Monarch I would go that route though. Let me put in context. I paid 279.99 for the gun last year, with a scope, and then got 100 back from Savage. So I have 179.99 in the gun..... |

Craig, since this is the case, put a Nikon Buckmater on it. Generally speaking the optics are better than anything that would have came on the rifle. Additionally the eye relief is a consistent four inches. Depending on his age and if you are going to let him shoot without you aiding in support, that would be a good hearty choice that would last him for numerous trips afield and in the woods.

That is one I am seriously considering.
When I take them, I usually sit in a shooting house and take a small Allen sandbag for a rest. My oldest shot a doe when he was 7, its my youngest I want to get on a deer. He is 10 now. He missed one last year with my 7-08, then handed it to my oldest who missed it twice. Then I handed him my AR15 and he hit it solid with a 60 gr parition handload. We found a ton of blood and got help to hunt the deer down, but...... no luck. My son didn't care for my 7-08, its a light ruger carbine with no recoil pad, so... I thought the 243 would suit him better. It's just a savage axis. Nice little gun tho. For the money, it was a deal. |

That's what my son has, is a .243 Win. It all started with a Remington 700 barreled action that I put a Timney trigger in. Then installed a Magpul hunter stock and matching Magpul MS3 sling, wearing Talley mounts housing a Vortex 3-15X at the moment.
That thing will ultimately serve him for the rest of his given life, at least until he's responsible to make his own decisions (purchases). |

Is the stock short enough for him to use comfortably?
243 does not kick much even for a 10 year old is the stock fits him adequately well. I am teaching my 7 year old daughter to shoot, so I am learning the hard way how hard it is to get something to fit a kid properly. If you saw a Whiskey 3 somewhere for $120 you should get it. Between Whiskey3, Buckmaster, Diamondback, Fullfield II and VX-2, there really isn't all that much performance difference and all of these are backed up by good customer support. ILya
