Just giving equal time .
No doubt about it, mirrorless is the future, but at least we can use current dslr lenses if, and when we make the shift to a mirrorless body.

I read a review not long ago that claims Sony's entry into the "game" is better than Nikon or Canon. So many features, so many differences. I've been a Canon user for quite a while. I've never seen that it was "better" than Nikon or anybody else... just had features I wanted or my wife wanted at a reasonable price... and always delivers excellent photos. Specs on the Canon are very good. |

I was surprised to see it using the same sensor as the 5D Mark III and being $1300 less than their flagship DSLR at the moment. I bet that was a welcome breath of fresh air for Canon users.

The only interesting feature there is the low light AF. That might be a significant competitive advantage, although they measure it with a F/1.2 lens. The video part is a major screw up on Canon's part. Let's hope the AF is good enough to mask the rest of it.
So far, the most exciting recent announcement has been Fuji X-T3, but there is still more to come from other companies. ILya

I don’t think it is the same sensor; its full frame and 30mp, the 5D mk iii is full frame 22mp. |

Sorry, It's the same sensor that's in the 5D Mark Iv.
Again, one card slot!?!?! What are these manufactures thinking? You'd think that after Nikon debuted the Z(ed) line and the numerous complaints of one card slot, Cannon would have capitalized on two slots after the fact. Now, the lenses....Cannon hit a home run in this case. Several pro native fast lenses, unlike Nikon Z(ed) 28-70 F/2 50mm F/1.2 35mm F/1.8 24-105mm F/4 With many more on the horiizon. Like Nikon, they created an adapter that will use the former lenses on the new R body. One thing I didn't see when reading was IS. The body has no built in IS. Additionally, only five frames per second with auto-focus while shooting on continuous high.

Both Canon and Nikon seem to want to drag their heels on mirrorless features, while Sony leads the way. Nikon’s future 58mm f/.95 lens got my attention. It will be manual focus. Currently, I believe Leica is the only manufacturer of a lens that fast, the 50mm noctilux, although Canon made one back in the rangefinder era. The 3D look wide open is unique, but folks say it can be difficult to achieve focus.

I'm eager to see that 58mm. I don't know why they did 58mm over 50mm, maybe Ted or Ilya have some better insight as to the engineering behind that choice.

Voigtlander (made by Cosina) offers a series of f/.95 lenses in their Nokton series for micro four thirds that are manual focus only. I have their 25mm f/.95. It is pretty difficult to achieve focus with paper thin DOF, however with MFT sensor, DOF isn't nearly as shallow at a given aperture as FF would be. By the way, welcome back Dave! I've missed seeing you around sir!

There is no technical reason behind this. It is a marketing decision since the old 58mm is sort of a famous design. While I like the idea of an ultrafast lens, I have very little interest in this one. Honestly, I think that making this lens for this mount only is a mistake on Nikon's part. I generally think that both Nikon and Canon are missing the point with their lens announcements for their mirrorless mounts. ILya
