That's exactly what I'm finding... the retailers have it listed as 2 3/4 not 3 like Federal list. And Federal was less than helpful...... |

1 1/8oz at 1200 fps isn't a hot shell. I shoot hotter shells than that on late season dove. Duck loads are at least a couple hundred fps faster with a similar steel payload.
The kind of load you're looking for is a pheasant or duck shell and it may not be 3" because they don't load in more shell than it takes to hold the components. I think if you pattern the gun you will see there aren't enough pellets in the loads to get enough of them on a partridge to pulverize it. Once you get to #6 or bigger it takes a turkey shell type payload to put enough pellets in a pattern to do that. I've shot dove while pass shooting ducks. Even if I pillow cased them, they were still edible. That's with #3 at 1550fps from a Light Modified. Start patterning with cylinder bore and tighten up until a bird can't get through it without catching a pellet. I suspect breaking it in with several boxes and keeping it clean and lubed will mean it will cycle 2 3/4" 1300+fps 1 1/4oz 7 1/2s.

Rodgers has it but listed as 2-3/4 for that model # and size.

Stumbled on this last night - https://www.federalpremium.com/products/shotshell/gold-medal-grand/gold-medal-grand-plastic/gmt116-8
List it as a 3" 8 shot.
However using that part # everywhere I find it list it as 2 3/4"...... emailed Federal to see it its been made as both. |

He has basically given up finding anything that will work without destroying the birds so he's just got to suck it up and pay for duck loads and shot skeet to get familiar with the gun prior to duck season. |

Have you found a duck load that works yet? This gun sounds like it is either picky or just not broken in. I always break in a new automatic by cleaning and lubing it, then firing couple boxes of hot loads before trying the light stuff. If one big steel pellet will take a partridge, then just choke your duck shells loosely.
Or, better yet, just dump the Franchi and get a Beretta. No worries about firing anything there.

Make sure truly 2 3/4". Some of the lighter loads are more like 2.5". Also try higher brass and a bit more velocity than the standard 1200fps stuff. Scrummy

Have fun. My shoulder is getting sore thinking about 3 1/2 " shells.

I agree with all accounts. We hunt on a preserve that raise quail..... along with pheasants and chukkar. |

Try counting to 7 or 8 before shouldering the weapon. This will 1. give you the range that will more reflect the range on ducks. 2. reduce the velocity on impact, 3. Open the pattern so fewer shot tear up the bird. Quail just doesn't seem like a suitable practice for duck and geese. Quail close range accelerating target shot on the rise. Duck and geese are a longer range, dropping target, decelerating to land on the decoys. Other than being in flight they have completely different flight characteristics. Not trying to bust your chops but around here Quail are a rare commodity, not to be wasted. Plus being tasty. Granted blowing things up can be fun.

For quail, you just need a different shotgun. With a lot of the magnum semi shotguns (3" and 3 1/2") they are just not going to function reliably with light or standard 2 3/4" loads, especially gas guns. There are some reliable gas guns, but they aint cheap. Then again recoil operated guns aren't cheap either, but they are more reliable and harder on the shoulder.

That won't help him get a feel for that gun prior to duck season though.
