Let me preface this by saying my knowledge of shotgun ammo is really l limited and I normally just go buy the cheapest bird shot I can get my hands on to use......... With that said. Purchased a buddy a new old stock Fiochi 912 Variomax. Its a 3.5" semi auto. We took it to a field hunting quail and it will not cycle with 2 &3/4" bird shot. He wants to get some practice with the gun prior to duck season and short of shooting steels and heavy loads trying to find an alternative that won't destroy the quail we are using for target practice....allot more fun than clays. Do you guys know of a 3" or 3.5" bird shot load? Something with a 7 shot or above? I've found some 6 shot 3" pheasant loads but I think they will destroy the quail but that may be what we have to use if we can't find a smaller shot.

Me, 7 is the heaviest I use for quail and dove. You don’t need 3”, 2 3/4 is fine for both, and is cheaper. Clean shot gun and try hotter rounds... or stick to the 3” shells.
Try estate ammo, Rodgers has good pricing. |

I know we don't need 3" to kill............. 2&3/4 is plenty sufficient but that won't cycle in his gun.... needing to go to 3" to help cycle reliable.
My super vinci cycles fine, his 912, not so much even with high power 2& 3/4 stuff. I would love to find 8 or 9 in a 3" shell in lead/bird shot.... just seems like it doesn't exist. |

only want to use 3'' or 3 & 1/2" just to get gun to cycle.
Using it for practice for duck hunting. |

That won't help him get a feel for that gun prior to duck season though.

For quail, you just need a different shotgun. With a lot of the magnum semi shotguns (3" and 3 1/2") they are just not going to function reliably with light or standard 2 3/4" loads, especially gas guns. There are some reliable gas guns, but they aint cheap. Then again recoil operated guns aren't cheap either, but they are more reliable and harder on the shoulder.

Try counting to 7 or 8 before shouldering the weapon. This will 1. give you the range that will more reflect the range on ducks. 2. reduce the velocity on impact, 3. Open the pattern so fewer shot tear up the bird. Quail just doesn't seem like a suitable practice for duck and geese. Quail close range accelerating target shot on the rise. Duck and geese are a longer range, dropping target, decelerating to land on the decoys. Other than being in flight they have completely different flight characteristics. Not trying to bust your chops but around here Quail are a rare commodity, not to be wasted. Plus being tasty. Granted blowing things up can be fun.

I agree with all accounts. We hunt on a preserve that raise quail..... along with pheasants and chukkar. |

Make sure truly 2 3/4". Some of the lighter loads are more like 2.5". Also try higher brass and a bit more velocity than the standard 1200fps stuff. Scrummy

Have you found a duck load that works yet? This gun sounds like it is either picky or just not broken in. I always break in a new automatic by cleaning and lubing it, then firing couple boxes of hot loads before trying the light stuff. If one big steel pellet will take a partridge, then just choke your duck shells loosely.
Or, better yet, just dump the Franchi and get a Beretta. No worries about firing anything there.

He has basically given up finding anything that will work without destroying the birds so he's just got to suck it up and pay for duck loads and shot skeet to get familiar with the gun prior to duck season. |
