The question doing the rounds:
6 divided by 2(1+2) = 9 or 1???( I cannot find the divide symbol on the pute) I get 9 but my brother is adamant it is 1. Despite the rules of equations as I know them I cannot convince him otherwise. Or am I wrong??

If you follow order of operations. You start with parenthesis. So (1+2) is 3. That leaves you 6/2(3) Now they all have the same precedence so its just left to right. 6/2 is 3 and then 3*3 is 9. So i say you are correct.
But if you take the 2*3 you would get 1. Seens like a trick question depending on who u ask |

Doesn't multiplication take precedence over division?

PEMDAS = Parentheses, exponents, Multiplication and Division (same level, left to right) and Addition and Subtraction (same level left to right)... so: 6/2*(1+2)= 6/2*3 (the parentheses disappear) = (using the rule above) 3*3= 9
there is no precedence in the operations of multiplication/division or addition/subtraction other than left to right order (unless, of course, inside parentheses) |

Googling a bit I have come across the matter of "binding: So 6/2(1+2) can be solved as
6/ (2(2+1)) 6/(2*3) 6/6=1 Apparently the ( ) binds the 2 to the 1+2 , so that multiplication becomes stronger then the BOMDA rule. If it was written as 6/2*(1+2) the BOMDA rule would give 9. It appears as though there is not just one answer. Only if the rules of interpreting the equation is agreed upon can it be solved with only 1 answer. Mathematicians apparently favour 1 as the answer.

Applying the distributive rule (which is the appropriate approach), you get: 6/2(1+2) = 6/(2 + 4) = 6/6=1 |

Again it is a trick question designed to cause disagreements. In your case to destroy brotherly love.

If the problem was stated 6 divided by 2(1+2) =. It is 1 since the 2(1+3) is treated as a quantity. If it was stated as 6/2*(1+2)=. It is 9 since operations within the parentheses are performed first then the / * operations are performed left to right.
