I'm considering a new scope for my 6mm Creedmoor, which I primarily use for whitetail hunting out to 500 yds. This rifle is currently fitted with a Leupold VX III 3.5-10 duplex, which I use at max power (10). The duplex reticle has limitations, which is my main reason for looking at MIL or MOA options.
The SWFA SS fixed scopes intrigue me, however I'm on the fence between the 12X or 16X for my application. Is the 16X going to be too much at closer ranges? |

Both will be too much at closer than 100 yds unless you have lots of time. I had a deer at about 50 yds with a scope in 9x and had to dial it down to find the deer. Its one thing to take a carefully aimed shot in bright daylight at 200 yds, and entirely another to hunt near dawn or dusk at under 100 yds. One really important consideration will be how bright will my optic be in low light. I have hunted a 20x SS don't have it any more, really grey in low light. I do have a 16x SS and I like it for a lot of things but not my primary hunting optic unless everything was past 200 yds. I have not owned the 12 x but have owned every variety of the 10x and it has been a great choice for being able to dial in correction. I have owned the 6x in both Mil Dot and Mil Quad and while I love the Mil Quad in the 16x I much prefer the Mil Dot in the 6x because the dots are easier to see in low light. The 6x is the brightest of the fixed powers with a 7mm exit eye pupil the 10 x is still fairly bright at 4.2mm exit eye pupil anything with more power will not be as bright. I absolutely love the 3-9x42 SS FFP it is an incredible scope and one I would highly recommend. The 3-15 has been made in several versions both FFP and second focal plane.(also a good choice). The 5-20x50 also a great optic but larger and heavier. For hunting I would pick the 3-9 simply because I prefer the single screw reset on the knobs to the 3 hex screw design. If I had to stay with a fixed power it would be the 6x or the 10x because so many deer are shot at dawn and dusk.

Ditto on the 3-9 SS. It has fine optics and the reticle is quite usable in low light.
I completely agree with Urimaginaryfrnd, I cannot see any form of hunting whitetail where a 12x or 16x scope would be a good choice. That holds true especially when the possibility of a close shot is in the cards. The FOV is just too small.

Low light will also suck with both of those scopes

I also own the 3-9x and it is a fantastic scope. Every time I use it the quality of the glass impresses me. Its just a flat out great scope. The only down side IMO is it tunnels between 3 and 4x, so you gain no extra FOV at that point. So its more like a 4-9x

Agree with most. I hunted for a year or so with the old SS 10X fixed and it is a great scope, though the FOV for up close stuff isn't ideal. If your budget is firm in that price-range, the 10X is a good bench scope and an okay hunting scope. In truth, I cannot think of a $300 hunting scope that could also do a good job on the bench. If this is a pure hunting rifle, I'd immediately stop looking at bench scopes, it is simply the wrong tool for the job. Also, what is the rifle, bolt gun, AR, what exactly? Some of the scopes mentioned are beefy and will totally mess up the rifle balance if it is a small gun.
