Hi - I'm a first time poster, and relative rookie at optics, so thanks in advance for any assistance.
I am looking to mount a scope on my Cooper model 52 in 25-06. The rings that came with the rifle (I purchased it used) are Leupold and the bases are set almost 5.5" apart, so the scopes available to me are somewhat limited (a 2.5-8x Leupold wouldn't fit). I have a Tract Toric 3-15x50 on another Cooper (Jackson Game in 30-06) that I like a lot, and Tract makes 3 scopes (Toric 3-15x42, Tekoa 4-16x44 and the new 30mm Toric 4-20x50) that have enough mounting space (5.73", 5.69" and 5.875", respectively). Even these aren't going to give me a lot of room to maneuver for eye relief, so should I:
I've been lusting for the new Toric 30mm and could put that on one of the Coopers and put the 3-15x50 on the other - but only if I go with different bases on the 25-06. But that option would be much more expensive than the other Toric or the Tekoa - and there are probably other good options out there. I will use the rifle mostly for deer hunting, with my longest shot most likely within 300 yards, and likely much closer. Low (legal) light is of course important. I use the 30-06 for the same, but the 25-06 is a bit smaller and I'd like to switch it up occasionally, as well as have the other rifle for my son to use. |

Hello Eddie and welcome to OT! if you would like a similar mag range and great glass to your Leupold 2.5-8, I would go with a Swarovski 3-9x36. Some even have the "L" designation for Long so will go over your action bridges no problem. Scrummy

Talley lightweight rings might be a option. You can reverse them to make a smaller distance between rings. They come in 1 inch and 30 mm size

If you are going to go picatinny I would not pay $117. Talley makes one that is under $50. A rail definitely will give you more mounting options, but does make access to the action a little harder. Just a trade off, but not a deal breaker in my opinion. |

Thanks guys. I will look into the Talley lightweights. I will also look into the Swarovski 3-9x36, but my only reason for trying to mount the Leupold was that I had it laying around. It was the first scope I had mounted on the 30-06 Cooper, and I've since decided that each of those rifles "need" better glass!
Great point on the Picatinny rail - thanks. I will check to see if the Talley model will fit, as I read somewhere that the model 52 scope mount changed over time for this reason.

Full disclosure as to what a novice I am - I was leaning towards the Picatinny or a longer scope due to some mixed views on extended bases, when I decided to check my *other* model 52.... it has an extended front base, which has served me without problems... Pictures of the 25-06 and 30-06 attached.
So much of my research on longer scopes may have gone to waste, but fwiw, here's the list that I came up with that would have been long enough for the standard mounts. (Maybe someone else will have this same issue down the road, but I'm also still interested in each of them.) 1-4 are 1" tubes, and 5 and 6 are 30mm (I had not yet spent as much time on 30mm.) I was also starting to lean towards smaller objective lenses to keep a low profile. Thoughts?

The forum software mandates a 50 post minimum before you can post pictures.
Honestly, if you can swing the cost of the Swaro Z5, go for it. It is an excellent scope and it seems to have enough tube length for your purposes without doing anything else. If you decide to use an extended base, Vortex Razor HD LH are among my favourite hunting scopes out right now. If you want the G4-BDC reticle in a 3-15x42 (it is being discontinued, so they are discounting it), you can pick up a 3-15x42 for $700 (used to be lower, but they are probably running out so I do not see it on SWFA website): ILya |

Thanks Koshkin and 3_tens. Either of you try any of the Tract scopes? If I'm going to swing for the Z5, I am going to need to think about the 30mm Tract Toric. I've got a pair of their binos and bought a demo version of the 3-15x42 Toric and love them both. And from the reviews I've seen, they get good marks. Not that it is a be-all, end-all, but the customer support on Tract is insane. I was online looking at their outlet items last *night* (they have 5 pretty good deals on scopes that just came out - none of which would work for my situation) and one of the Jons was online and answered my chat questions within a minute!

Toric products I have are great. I do owe many other high quality optics to which I can compare them to. I have the 30mm Toric 4-20x50mm and think it is an incrediable bargin buy. It's 1/2 the cost of what other manufactures want for the same features and spec.. Awesome glass and contrast. I recently purchased the Toric 10x50 binos and they are just as bright and have better contrast and color definition as my 8x56mm Stieners. The Torics were about 3/4 the cost of the Stieners. Actually the cost is closer to only 1/2 considering the time frame difference of money. Stiners were bought about 15 years ago. Current manufacturing processes have improved to appoint that it very cost effective to obtain great optics from reputable manufacturers. Modern glass and their resulting better images have gotten much better for any given price point than they were 10-15 years ago. Jon at Tract said yesterday they will be producing a 34mm tube with 56mm objective scope for PRS shooters early next year. I can't wait to get one of those.

Since the Swarovski 3-9X36 has been mentioned, the center tube between the flare-out for the objective bell and the ocular piece runs 5.35", so maybe too short for your purposes. Another Swarovski Z3 scope, the 4-12X50, has a longer center section of 5.59". These two Swarovskis are 1" scopes. On purely aesthetic grounds, I personally would pass on the Picatinny rail option. The Cooper rifle (particularly if wood-stocked) is just too handsome to be saddled with the utilitarian-looking rail, but that's just my own subjective opinion. Aesthetics are important to me, but aren't to everyone, so this may be irrelevant to you. I'd go with Talleys or, better still, the S&K mounts, which to my eye, are the best-looking mounts available--even sleeker than Conetrols and easier to install--and are windage-adjustable. Here's a set on one of my Anschutz rimfires. The front base could be reversed to reduce the space between the rings and accommodate a scope with shorter mid-section. This might address your original concern. Edited by South Pender - July/11/2019 at 00:51 |

To close the loop (in the off chance anyone in the future has the same problem and finds this thread in a search), I ended up going with the Swaro Z5 3.5-18x44 and Talley low bases and premium steel rings. The Swaro has plenty of mount space, and the setup looks awesome. (One day when I reach the post minimum, I will add a picture!)

Doug - I just shipped the Cooper off today to have it threaded for a suppressor. Just shot the rifle yesterday for the first time and encountered a problem with the bolt getting stuck, so hope they will take care of that too. Hopefully I will hit 50 posts by the time the rifle is back in my hands - but that will mean that I will have spent more money in the interim.

odd you had an issue with your Cooper. I have an Open Country in .300WM, fantastic rifle and great action.
If you want a Picatinny, have Cooper install one while it’s there.

Agreed. I did buy the 25-06 used, so who knows what's going on with the bolt. Lubricating it didn't help at all. My 30-06 has been perfect for me.

I have had issues where the screws holding the base were too long and would bind against the bolt be sure to ask them to look at it and the idea of having Cooper put a rail on while its there does open up a whole new world of options for you. I will say that I like the Talley Lightweight ringmounts that I have on my 300 WSM no complaints with them. Also 25-06 does beg for some added magnification so the Z5 would be an excellent choice. https://www.swfa.com/swarovski-3-5-18x44-z5-riflescope-12.html Link to trade in optics etc toward other ones at SWFA

Excellent point about the mount screws. It’s not at all uncommon for mount base screws to be slightly too long, and since most receiver threaded holes go through the receiver, they can easily bind up the bolt. Likewise, the forward-most mount screw can also bind against barrel threads, also not a good thing.
