OK. I have been shooting rifles/shotguns/handguns for years. Mostly I have used iron sights except on centerfire hunting rifles. What I know about scopes is just enough to be dangerous.
I am about to buy a scope for a Ruger 77/22 that came with its own rings. Why would I not just use those assuming I am going to put a 1" scope on the gun and are not planning to co-witness? Thanks in advance for any education.

The rings that come with Ruger rifles are decent in my experience. The only issue you may have is they may be to high depending upon the scope you choose to purchase. But they may be just right as well. You cannot co-witness with a bolt action and a magnified scope. Co-witness is typically used on AR-15 guns and pistols with Red dot optics. You have the red dot inbetween the two sights and they are high enough to line up with the red dot in the optic. What exact rifle do you have? ANd what scope are you thinking of getting?

Sorry about the misuse of the term co-witness. The rifle is a Ruger 77/22 All Weather in .22WRM. I just bought this NIB. Unfortunately I bought this from a gun store with a terrible web site. It has no iron sights which I really wanted and a composition stock as opposed to the Zytel boat paddle stock. So, I'm seeking out a replacement stock and a set of iron sights as well as a scope. I will put a 4 power fixed scope on it. I would prefer one with AO, but I am about to give up on that as I cannot find one to replace the one my son talked me out of in the 1990s. (Beeman SS2) If I give up the AO, my thinking is a Leupold rimfire.

IF you are really set on a fixed 4x scope with AO for some odd reason, you can always get Hawke Vantage 4x32AO:
I think BSA and Nikkon Stirling also market a 4x32 scope with AO, but I trust Hawke a bit more from a customer support standpoint. The rings that came with your Ruger rifle are fairly reasonable, so I would try them first. ILya

Guess what? The Ruger factory supplied rings don't fit the Leupold FX 4 power. Too tight. Amazing! Still learning.
