ok fellas,Ilya included, since the Leica ER i and the Visus is the same scope except for diff cosmetics will the bdc turret from the ERi fit the Visus w/o any mods to the scope? I’m not a super duper turret twister but a few clicks here and there would be nice to do. Like to sight in dead on at 100yds and dial a few clicks for at most a 500 yd shot.
Thanks, Big Ed

...which is to say they are optically superb, as would be expected from a Leica product.

Hi Big Ed. There isn’t any optical difference whatsoever between the ER and Visus scopes of the same configuration because both are the same identical scopes internally, with the same optical design.

kick absolutely what I’m saying. Especially us older fellas as our iris won’t quite open to the diameter it used to when we were younger. To reiterate I absolutely trust Ilya but I like to get the common mans opinion too. As in you really can’t have too many opinions

I understand and respect Ilya’s post but I was also wanting mikes individual thoughts and opinion on the matters I asked about. Everybody’s eyes are different. Ilya is on a different level than us mortals. His professional opinion is always taken highly. But, all us average guys matter too especially to an average guy.
Thanks, Big Ed

ILya is the expert, the Visus improvements are with the illumination.

Well fellas I took the plunge and bought a couple Leica Visus 3-12x50mm. They are deff a quality made optic and I absolutely love the reticle as to me it’s a dead ringer for a zeiss #60 ret with the illum dot very small again ala zeiss #60 size small dot that is wayyy smaller than meopta meostar 4C illum dot. I have yet to get the visus out at close to dark and compare to my zeiss v4 conquest and meostar but I’m gonna when I get the chance.
Thanks for all the advice fellas, Big Ed

The center of the Visus 4a reticle is actually larger than the older ER 4a reticle, I have both scopes.

A FWIW from another low light hunter. Have both the Leica ERi 3X12X50 with the 4A and the Meopta Meostar R1r 3X12X56 with a 4K reticle. In my low light testing using "old" eyes, the ERi runs almost step-for-step with the big Meo in terms of visual clarity at last light. The Leica also has longer eye relief than the Meo and a shorter extrusion expansion of the objective end providing greater mounting flexibility; hence, fitting more of my rifles using conventional mounts. The one drawback, for me at least, is the thin bars and center dot of the Leica reticle disappear in very low light whereas the Meo #4 is still visible. However, as long as the electronics hold on the Leica to produce the red dot you are still good to go. In contrast, if the headlights go out on the Meo you still have a point of aim (by bracketing) using the #4.

The Leica is absolutely superb. However, purely in terms of low light performance, I doubt you will notice any difference between it and the Meopta and maybe even the Zeiss at the same magnification settings even though I believe the Leica to be superior in terms of pure image quality. If you do, the difference will be very subtle since you're comparing to 56mm scopes. However, the Leica does have higher contrast, which might help with distinguishing critters in very low light, and it also has AquaDura outer lens coatings, which I've found very helpful for keeping your objective and eyepiece lenses clear of moisture/condensation in wet, cold weather.

thanks ILya. Unless you don’t think I will be improving on my low light performance of my meoptas and zeiss I think imma drop the hammer on the Leica Visus 3-12x50.
Thanks for the replies men, Big Ed

LOL, I'm SURE it did....
But I do agree. Everybody's got different eyes and brain processing... Ilya can definitely be trusted to tell you straight about optics! Billy's description of him is spot On! He can only help you make a short list, the3 rest will be up to you and your eyes and perception. Good luck!

Hi Big Ed,
Ilya won't make a comment like superb if he has not looked through one. He is very serious about Optics it is his profession after all, it's also his passion. I and most all of us here trust his assessment on any number of optics related questions or issues. Now having said that, it is, as all things are, a matter of personal preference as to what is comfortable. I hope this helps with your decision. |
