I have a Winchester Model 94AE .30-30. I plan to shoot the new Hornady LeverEvolution for longer distance with my .30-30 for whitetail deer hunting. What power and scope would you recommend. I'm not looking for an expensive scope but not for an inexpensive one either.

I am afraid, you'll have to be a little more pecific about how far you think you'll be shooting and how much money you are willing to spend. For most hunting needs a 3-9x40 or similar from a reputable maker/product line is just about perfect.
The rest depends on your budget. ILya |

I happen to have a Winchester 94AE .30-30 and it wears a Weaver V3 scope. That rifle has also worn some other scopes and in my opinion anything with an objective larger than 32mm takes away from the balance and trim lines of the M94. Any quality straight tube scope you might choose will compliment your M94 very nicely. If you are not comfortable with 3x at the top end then look for something 4.5x (Nikon Monarch) or 5x (Leupold VX3) on the top end.

Are the majority of your shots going to be under 50yds.? If so, consider a red dot 1x. My Marlin 30/30 wears a Bushnell Trophy red dot and is fantastic for use on a brush gun. Very fast, reliable and low profile.

I will be using the gun most of the time for tree stand hunting when I'm deep in the woods or during deer drives. I plan on starting to use the new Hornady LeverEvolution ammo to reach a little father. I had questioned about putting a 3-9x40 but I don't want to go to big or to small.

i would recommend a 40 or a 44mm objective - 3x9x44 ought to be plenty unless you need a lil more light
cabela's alaskan guide's are great, so are the elite bushnells....3200 or 4200's i was very impressed when i bought my first 4200 elite.......it outperformed my 44mm zeiss.
i have a 3x9x50mm on my 30/30 and it has downed some very nice deer - up to 120 yds.
great gun - wouldn't trade it for anything.............well, i say that, anyway......
good luck |

i got a crazy idea that nobody has ever thought about for the 30-30, i think it may catch on in this country too, and if your doing mostly drives and sitting in a stand in a wooded area where most shots are under 75yds
DONT USE A SCOPE ITS A LEVER GUN Edited by pyro6999 |

get a low power variable like a 1.5-6x42 or do like i did and get a
4x40 nikon monarch - it's nice and bright and a good steady image for the 30/30
good luck. you have lots of 'purists' that like the iron sights on the 30/30 - in the south, we hunt in the dark. and i LOVE my 30/30, so i put a scope on it so i could see what i was plinkin at.

Don't overscope that riffle. A fixed 4x (32mm obj or smaller) or smaller will work just fine. Pyro, a scope on a woods rifle helps to make out horns in the thick stuff and makes getting on target quicker than with the stock iron sights. Another option would be a reciever mounted peep sight. The Williams WGRS is a good one. |
