My gemtech rifle cans do not come apart.
I'd take a good look at the inside (focused mostly on the side opposite the final strike), then put it on a gun of known accuracy. If it really messes with accuracy, either looks for ways to address it at caliber or make it a dedicated sub-caliber can. If the 30-cal use is buggered, it might be far less so at 223. But all-around, it sucks. |

That is good info about 110gr Vmax coming apart.
If I were you, I would talk to Hornady about it. BSF barrels twist rate is not that fast for Blackout. Were you shooting handloads? or factory ammo? I have two 300 Blackout barrels with 1 in 5" twist and one with 1 in 7 " twist. I mostly shoot subsonics, but it sounds like I need to be careful with supersonic stuff. ILya

Yea, reading his post made me think of my recent testing a Noveske-barreled 300BO with Barnes vor-tx 110s, I just screwed on the can and loosed the gods of war, no worries about can health.
Because I like to party! The best way to learn is from the experiences of others. And cheaper too! |

Yiou may want to see what Hornady thinks about that. Vast majority of Blackout barrel out there are either 1-7" twist or 1-8" twist. If they sell loaded ammo for that caliber, it better be able to work in most commonly available barrels. ILya

RC, it is sort of a coincidence that almost the only supersonic ammo I have on hand has Barnes 110gr monolithic bullet.
I think I still have some Fron S&B with 150gr FMJ bullets, but everything else is subsonic. There is some work being done on Blackout barrels that are even faster twist than the 1-5" I have here, but that will require a very different bullet construction to work at supersonic speeds.

Vmax bullets are very thin jacketed, very frangible varmint bullets intentionally designed to basically grenade upon impact with the flesh of vermin. There’s nothing wrong with the bullets; they’re doing what they’re designed to do; they just don’t play well with super fast twists. They are right on the jagged edge of almost flying apart with moderately high velocities and moderate twists.
Barrels for .300 BLK were designed to stabilize long, heavy bullets from 190 gr to 220 gr at subsonic velocities, so they have 1:7 or faster twists. They will still shoot lighter bullets just fine as long as the bullet isn’t extremely frangible like Vmaxes, BlitzKings, Varmint Grenades, etc. It ain’t an issue of weight, it’s an issue of jacket thickness and/or overall construction.

Yeah, they shouldn’t be using Vmaxes in that ammo. Maybe they didn’t have issues in their testing, or maybe it will work ok in an 8 twist barrel. It’s a risky choice on their part for sure. |

Worth a try G!!! They just might offer to give you a new box of rounds.... Not that it would help...

I would think, at this point, a free box of rounds would be somewhat akin to a slap in the face. Kinda like saying, "Here, go ruin another can."

Going to wait until I have the box in hand so I can give them the lot #, I'm sure they will want it.

Just realized I never updated this thread.
Did talk to hornady and huntershack. neither would do anything remotely considered helpful in this scenario. Hornady did offer to evaluate my remaining ammo and replace with a different gr bullet if my gun didn't like the 110s. Gemtech did not come apart. I did clean up the exit hole with a dremel and have still been using the can. No adverse affects on other guns except slightly more POI shift when going from un-suppressed to supppressed I relegated the remaining 110s to a gun that I don't run suppressed. They have been since reloaded with Barnes 110 tac bullets that run fine.
