Hello to all on Optics Forum.
So, I guess I am in what someone on this forum has described as my "Euro phase"........
I have narrowed an optic choice to the 2.5-10x42 Zeiss VM/V #11 or the 3-12x42 SB VH #9.
A note: Kudo's to "tbone" on his rating scale.. It is probably the most consumer minded optics post I've ever seen and has guided these two finalists.
Scope will be mounted on a Browning BPR in .308.
As my name suggests, I live in DEER (4 weeks November)
Walk out about an hour before legal (sunrise -1/2hr) and sit in a ground blind in a swamp or hardwood grove until 10:00am then still hunting until 12:30. Quick bite to eat ….Drive to an evening stand location usually in a swamp and sit from 1:30 till dark (sunset +1/2hr) (repeat). Throw in a few mid day pushes and scouting sessions and that is the way you hunt in
BEAR (4 weeks September)
Bear hunting is tree stand hunting over bait in the evening until dark and then some. The big males just don’t come in until dark.
MOOSE (1 week October)
Moose hunting is driving down a woods road at dawn and dusk until you see one and hoping like heck it falls in the road after you shoot it. (lottery hunt…. 2K permits 75K applications) I’ve been trying for 10 years with no luck.
So which one and why?
BTW... I feel 2-3 minutes of shooting time per sit is worth much more to me over the 20 more years ( I hope) of use than the $750 in savings for an 8 or 9 rated optic.
Thanks to all who post.

Tbone1's opinion might change in the near future, he has a swarovski Z6 on order and will be one of the first to get one.

Welcome to The OT!!
The S&B you inquire about, (I had this scope w/ a lit #7), will weigh a little more than the Diavari. About 5 oz. more, if that matters to you.
Both scopes are incredible, world class optical devises. I have always felt that the S&B I had was tougher and more robust than a VM/V. (Shrug)
Both scopes offer world class CS, in the event you should ever need it. Never dealt with S&B's CS, but did have a crack @ Zeiss's. I was treated very well and came away 100% satisfied. They replaced my Conquest within 8 days.
I prefer the 3-12 magnifacation because I reload and like to try different load combo's at extended ranges.
Both scopes have FFP reticles and 30mm tubes.
Tough choice, but I'd probably go with the Schmidt Und Bender on this one "IF" the majority of my hunting was static. If I was moving around more than sitting, I'd go with the Diavari.

either are fine - may i recommend kahles?? - i prefer them over zeiss and swaros.
you may get more for your money w/ kahles C or CL.
but you have selected two fine scopes.

It will be the Schmidt and Bender.
As soon as my 1st born is sold (she isn't potty trained so I"ve lowered the price ), I'll order the scope and get a review posted. |
