I just returned from a business trip to MI where I was able to spend some time at the Cabelas store just outside of AnArbour. That was my first Cabelas store experience and it is quite impressive. At any rate, while there I was able to look at some Docter Optics scopes. This very informal evaluation was done inside and outside of the store for about a 1/2 hr in the evening. The 30mm scopes are about as good as you can get, I was very impressed with how the stacked up against Swarovski and Zeiss 30mm. The optics were bright, clear and they had a nice heavy duplex. I think these are defineately worth a look at if you are looking at buying a 30mm european scope. Now here comes the strange part. I thought the 1" scopes were less than impressive. The glass was somewhat blurry, not nearly as bright and I could not tell that the reticle was a fine duplex without really straining my vision and holding the scope just right. The strange thing about the reticle is that all of Cabelas stock was labeled C-Plex reticles1" and 30mm. These were obviously two different reticles. The only thing that I can figure out is that the 30mm scopes are made to higher standard then the 1" scopes. I am curious if Chris or anyone else has had an experience similar to my own with this brand. As things stand now Docter 30mm scopes Good, Docter 1" scopes Bad. Incidentally I looked at mutiple models of both 1" and 30mms. ranburr |

I have only looked at them in a conference room and we have yet to receive any for our inventory. I have heard others make the same observation however. |

ranburr, did you by chance get to check out the new VXIII scopes, and the new VXII's, if so, hwo does this years models of both compare to a VXIII from last year. or anyone else. im still trying to deicide whcih one to get for my LVSF that cane last tuesday. im leaning towards the VXII so i will have some money to put towards another gun, becuase you can never haev too many. this is my thinking.... get the VXII 3-9x40 now for my LVSF in 223, jsut for fox huntin this fall/winter, and then get a 204 ruger, or soemthing a little more fur-friendly in another LVSF, and maybe then put a 4.5-14, or something on the 223. cory |

I did not look at the Leupolds, I was trying to get a reasonable eval of the Docters since I was not sure when I would ever see another one. I think the VXII is a good scope. Correct me if I am wrong, but the VXII is simply the old Vari-XIII relabeled. I was pleased with my old Vari-XIIIs until I took the Zeiss plunge. ranburr |

i think im going to go with the VXII, and then eventaully replace it with a better scope, and then i will always have the extra scope to throw on a new gun to shoot, just until i get a scope for it. never know, i might even buy a zeiss cory |

"Correct me if I am wrong, but the VXII is simply the old Vari-XIII relabeled" Basically yes.... the quality just got passed down, but they are still labeled the same. The older Vari-XI is now a VXI with Vari-XII quality. Same with the Vari-XII, it is now a VXII with Vari-XIII quality. In effect doing something all together different to what is now the VX-III. New for 2004! Leupold's new VX-III line of riflescopes offering Indexed Matched Lens Systems, finger adjustable 1/4 MOA windage and elevation dials with resettable pointer dials, three new reticle designs, more 30mm maintube models, and side focus parallax adjustment.
