i know this won could be an epic battle so i bought extra insurance for swfa cause there could be injuries to life and property over this one, but i was looking at guns/ammo or rifleshooter and jon sundra did an article on if he ruled the world he would tell his ammo factory to chamber only certain variations in each caliber, the question is if you ruled the world who would be the only scope maker you would let build scopes for the entire world and why? |

That depends on who you ask. There are a bunch of people out there who are already convinced that there is only one scope maker out there: Leupold.
In all fairness, if you want one scope maker for the entire world, Leupold is not a bad choice since it makes wide range of different products for different applications. The sheer variety of what they make is very impressive. I think product line diversity that covers everything from plinking to hunting to tactical applications should be a deciding factor here. That for the most part rules out various European manufacturers, since they do not have any low end scopes (defining low end as ~$100, since that is what people who are just occasional plinkers/hunters seem to be willing to my in my experience). That, for now, also rules out companies that only make scopes in China. Those are still not good enough on the high end. That leaves companies that sell primarily Japanese or Japanes/other Oriental manufacture scopes. My pick (here is where cheaptrick faints from shock) is Sightron. S1 scopes are cheap but still of decent quality. S2 scopes offer good optical and mechanical quality without getting too expensive for hunters and budget minded tactical shooters. S3 scopes offer 30mm tubes and exposed knobs for those who insist on having them (tactical.competition community mostly). For those wishing a red dot, Sightron offers a pretty decent multireticle red dot scope. Nikon could have fit the bill, but their Pro-Staff scopes are yucky and they discontinued the Tactical line (I think I heard that somewhere). Bushnell does not really have a tactical scope line, but they, apparently, are coming out with a 30mm Elite 4200 with exposed knobs, so they are getting there. They are certainly well covered on other fronts with Trophy, Elite 3200 and Elite 4200. Burris/Pentax scopes also cover the whole range from Pentax Gameseekr to Lightseeker-30. However, no true tactical scope in Pentax line-up and nothing cheaper than Fullfield II in Burris product line. New Burris 2-7x35 scopes are pretty inexpensive though, so Burris might work. ILya |

NITEFORCE ?? If they had all the buisness, prices would come down enough to cover the low-end also ???? Great versatility so far..

i was actually very surprised by the nikon prostaff my brother in law bought one a year and a half ago and it actually was about as clear as my then 4 year old buckmaster, so i think the prostaff for the little it costs is a viable option for the fruggle minded.

A monopoly has little, if any, incentive to lower prices. If they are the only maker, there will be a lot of demand anyway. ILya |

Well spoken, koshkin. Indeed, if there were only one scope manufacturer, I would be surprised if very many of us could afford rifle scopes at all. Look at Microsoft, we pay around 100 dollars for a $0.25 CD holding a (relatively) unreliable operating system . I think in such an instance though, I would choose Leupold or use iron sights lol.
I might actually start a new thread on a certain article I read that is amazing... |

I tend to agree that it would be Leupold, followed by Sightron (better quality that Loopy, worse distribution) and Nikon.
I thank GOD that this is just a hypothetical question and not a statement of fact!!!! That's like saying the only car company is Ford... |

I think this approach by Sunda is not well thought out....one scope manufacturer would dictate their own prices....it's like when one newspaper in town buys out the other.....next thing you know they've doubled their price to pay for the buy out and to capitalize on being the only show in town. With ammo...it doesn't matter what they do because I'll still be handloading my own the way I like it. I'm not up to making my own scopes......

It seems "SUNDRA" has had an ill affect, wether it be one company or three, he has stirred up the "muck" !!! Cant emagine the debate if LEUPOLD goes under !!!
