I don't know much about scopes....but I know Nikon, in general is better than Simmons. But today I had a gun dealer that I have trusted tell me that the Simmons 6-18x50 ProSport Master Series (51491) is an unusually great scope for the money(of which I have very little)...I need an new scope for my Browning BAR 30.06, but can't spend more than $200. Is the dealer crazy? Should I be buying a Nikon Buckmaster from the sample list instead? ....or is there something else I should spend my $ on?  Can't afford a Monarch...even if it IS a great deal.

I am not a big fan of Simmons, especially when they are owned by Meade.

I think you would be better served by looking at Nikon Buckmaster, Burris Fullfield II and Bushnell Elite 3200 scopes.

Koshkin - I recall reading somewhere that Simmons scopes would be improved the Meade acquisition.  Something about a lot of high tech patents.   What is your take on Meade?

Yes, I was never a Simmons fan, I just heard that this particular scope is special....but it seems the wrong power for me anyway...SO....ILya: I can afford the Buckmaster or the FF2, but I can't even find a Elite 4300....what about the 3200(can't afford the 4200)?  Of these three scopes, which would you choose?  BTW, there is a FF2 pkg(3x9 with spotting scope) on the sample list that is the exact same price as new....weird, huh?

I meant Elite 3200.  Sorry for the typo.  I think I prefer Fullfield II over Buckmaster and Elite 3200, but all three are good.

As for Meade, so far most of their high tech patents seem to have been primarily vaporware.  Time will tell, but I am not going to keep my hopes up.

I rate the Simmons a couple of notches better then a BSA. .....

......and I get nauseous thinking about a BSA.

I rate a toilet paper roll with a couple wires punched through it to make a crude crosshair a couple notches better than a BSA.  At least when it fails, you wouldn't be out any money.

LOL.....yea, the simplicity of what's inside a toilet paper tube produces a clearer and sharper image then what happens inside of a BSA tube.

If i was you i would go with the simmons prohunter 3-9x40, i bought one for my marlin 30aw 30-30 and i love it, holds zero and a glass nearly as clear as the prostaff. You can pick it up at walmart.com for 70 bucks, trust me you wont be disappointed with the prohunter.

Some of these old threads die hard but the need for a scope that cost less than $200 is an itch that needs scratched. http://www.samplelist.com/Riflescopes-C3391.aspx#Redfield   SAMPLELIST.COM has a lot of great values, while the ones below are in no specific order they are all under $200 and looking for a home.

Some of these used scopes would serve you well until you can afford the expensive scopes we all wish we could own, plus you can always trade something in toward what you want on SAMPLELIST.COM   http://www.samplelist.com/TradeInForm.aspx

Why would u start out at 6x? I have 2 Simmons scopes and they do not compare optically to any Nikon. I had a fulfield 2 and would get a Nikon over it as well. Elite 3200 is nice. I have a monarch ucc and a monarch 3. Both are very good in low light. Not as good as my minox za5 or Zeiss.
