Do you want a heavier target rifle or hunting rifle???????......Since your price is limited to $700, your only choice would be a conventional hunting rifle as your not going to find for $700, a heavy bbl. target rifle, unless you run across a reeeeeeally good deal!!!!....Out of your above mentioned calibers, my personal 1st choice would be a 300 magnum, followed very closely as a 2nd, the 7/mag!!!.............Are you match shooting at 1000 yards or just plinking here and there with the buds??????.....................Need some more info here to be helpful............

look for a USED 338 lapua in a sako TRG-S - m995 action
i bought a TRG-S years ago for 550 bucks!!! they can be found every once in a while. That gun will damn near fire through the same hole at 100 yrds. really really accurate w/ a great trigger and action.
or the savage heavy barrelled hunting rifle is nice w/ the accutrigger - and can be had in 300 winmag. that will reach out there.
it'll be hard pressed to find a better shooter for that price.
good luck.

I have searched and researched the same question you are asking. For $700 you will only be able to buy a used gun. It will pretty much come down to taking what you can find for the money. You may have to take something in a calibre that was maybe not your first choice, in other words a 338 winmag or whatever comes up. Good luck on your search. |

oldfashion, You will not get a good NEW rifle suitable for true "match" shooting within your $700 budget. Simply ain't gonna happen. And this is before you add a good scope. First, you need to define what you mean by "match" shooting, as different shooting disciplines require entirely different equipment. For your budget, you would come out ahead by buying a used benchrest rifle from the classifieds of a site like www.benchrest.com -- IF you're talking about 1000yd benchrest. Forget factory rifles, unless you either aren't serious about competing and enjoy getting your butt kicked, or you plan to spend a lot of money later to accurize it to make it competitive. Almost no factory rifle will be competitive, unless you're shooting in a factory class, Tactical, High Power, etc.
.338 win mag would not be the best choice for a 1000 yd match rifle because of excessive recoil and poor selection of true match grade bullets, but again, it all depends on which type of competitive shooting. It would be an o.k. choice for long range field tactical, but .338 Laupa would be better. The Sako TRG-S in .338 Lapua would be a great choice for this as JB mentions, but you're unlikely to find one in good shape for under $700. Edited by RifleDude |

As for cartridge choice alone, you'll likely get the best raw accuracy from the .308, but again, it all depends on the rifle it's chambered in and in what class of competitive 1000yd shooting you plan to do. You're wanting a simple answer to a question that has no simple answer because it mainly depends on the type of 1000yd competitive shooting and the equipment you're using. If 1000yd benchrest, besides .308, forget the rest and go with a 6-.284, 6.5-284, 6BR, etc. 6mm and .30 caliber by far have the best selection of match grade bullets. Barrel life will be shorter with the magnums -- in fact about HALF that of the .308. If you're shooting 1000yd. tactical, I'd go .338 Lapua, .300 mag or maybe 7 mag. The magnums will give you greater margin of error for drop at unknown distance. |

All .30 calibers are quite poor at longer ranges due to bad ballistic coefficents. That means that the .30 bullets will drift more in the wind than many others. The way around it is to use very heavy bullets in .30, above 200 grains.
.308 win is a true looser at that distance.
6,5-284 is probably the optimum when it comes to winddrift, effectivness , low recoil etc.
.338 lapua is a better choise but much more expensive.
I suggest to you look into a ballistic program and looks mostly at wind drift. Distances can always be measured, but wind drift might change over the distance and make problems you never tought was possible.

Not necessarily. The .308 has won many 1000 yd benchrest competitions for a reason -- it makes up for wind drift by its excellent inherent accuracy. The 155 gr., 167 gr., and 185 gr. Lapua Scenars provide quite high BC and are excellent long range competition bullets. The same goes for the 175 gr. SMK. Yes, it's true that the .308 has a wind drift disadvantage compared to the others, however, using the correct bullets compensates for this somewhat, plus it offers much less recoil and twice the accurate barrel life of the others.
I agree the very best cartridge for 1000 yd mentioned is probably the 6.5-.284 (when considering everything -- price, powder consumption, recoil, BC), but it wasn't included in oldtimer's list. |

one thing to think about here is that in european countries the 6.5mm is very popular and over here the .308 is very popular, i do know for sure that the 6.5mm's sectional density is awesome for hunting purposes, 120 gr 6.5mm is like 160gr .308 and a 140 gr 6.5 is comparable to a 190 gr .308 the .308 indeed has quite a history in this country. |

There has been won 1000 yard competitions with .223 and AR15 as well, that doesent make the .223 ideal. Same thing for benchrest generally, loads of competitions has been won in the history by .222, but just as .222 has a disadvantage against the 6mm for wind, the same thing is about the .308.

all shooting games have their rules--- as much as I like the 308 (especially when spelled , belt fed) its popularity rests on it's connection to contests centered around military type events. shooting matches designed and started by civilians such as long range rifle silhoutte hardly use 308 where , if one chooses a short action, the 708 kicks ass. If you can stand the pain of replacing barrels 7mag or 7 ultra does even better. either way barrel length, stock configuration, type of trigger, (at this level we are looking at Anschutz) and caliber or cartridge type is pretty minor.

Agree totally, Technika, but oldfashion was asking about the calibers on his list, not about the 6.5-.284 or .338 Lapua, and he didn't specify what type of competitive shooting he would be doing. Also, there haven't been just "some" 1000 yd competitions won with a .308 -- there have been MANY 1000 yd competitions won with the .308. He gave a budget, and in order to get closest to that budget, we have to deal with what calibers are likely chambered in suitable rifles for target shooting already, and none of the others except for the .308 will be. Considering a factory chambered rifle, which his budget mandates, suitable for some forms of target shooting, the other choices are available only in typical sporter weight hunting rifles. Within a $700 budget for rifle only, discussions of what is "ideal" goes out the window. If his budget was $2000, then my answer would have been entirely different. The magnums on his list will also have relatively short barrel life, which also wouldn't be kind to his budget. Therefore, within the limitations he's already given, he's going to be compromised as-is. At least the .308 is available in some good heavy barreled rifles, and several scopes are available with custom BDC especially for the .308, along with the fact brass is very plentiful and the round is easy and more economical to load for. At least the .308 will give him a good foundation for long range shooting and as he gains more experience, perhaps he can upgrade later. After all, the standard issue Marine sniper rifle for engaging targets up to and beyond 1000 meters is the M40, which is based on the Rem700 action, and is chambered for 7.62 X 51mm -- .308. In order to stay closest to his budget, the .308 is not only the best choice among the calibers he lists... it is the ONLY choice. If he goes with your suggestions -- the 6.5-.284, .338 Lapua, etc., he will be looking at either a custom barrel job or otherwise a very expensive rifle. This is much like suggesting a Zeiss VM/V scope to someone whose budget is limited to $250. Edited by RifleDude |
