I've gotten myself to the position where I have the bucks and I think the
intestinal fortitude to buy something like a Leupold Mark 4. But I am eager for advice and information. Someone suggested to me that I should also look at Nightforce and US Optics (neither of which I can find on sale at SWFA incidently, am I missing something??). If I do stick with my plan to get a Mark 4, I plan to go with the new TMR (Tactical Milling Reticle) instead of MilDots. I think I want the more precise M1 turrets instead of the M3 BDC scheme. I am clueless about what M2 turrets might be, but I think I have seen them mentioned. Then there is the question of 40 versus 50 objective. My first inclination was the 50, but someone suggested that the 50 raises the scope up enough to make it a little trickier to get a decent face position on the rifle. If I decide to go with a 50mm, then I will take a hard look at the Nightforce. What do they have for reticles? Anything like the TMR?? And what am I gonna do with it. Well to start, it will go on a Savage Model 10 .308 rifle -- and when I get fed up with getting beat up by that, it might move it back to a RRA .223 varmint style rifle for more leisurely shooting. Right now I have the Bushnell 3200 Elite 10x40 mildot on the Savage, which is a great little scope for the money (and the RRA is just sitting there naked, poor thing). Anyway, I'll be reading through all the posts I can till my brain curdles, but anyone who has thoughts they want to share, I will be grateful. |

M2 knobs are 1/2 moa per click lower profile like M3. I think you want 1/4 moa clicks. I really like bothe the RRA 223 and the Savage 10FP .308 and have both. I have had several different scopes on both over the last several years. I have Leupold Mark 4 scopes at this time and am in the process of trading a Leu Mk 4 10x M3 toward either an IOR like this
Or a Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20x50 in the new FFP (first focal plane)
My other Leupold Mark 4 is the 8.5-25x50 illuminated mil dot scope and was bought just before they came out with the TMR which is a better reticle. I really think the 8.5 is just too high of a power and the 4.5-14 is probably the perfect scope but there is NO FFP model in a 4.5-14 and the 6.5-20 is only now in the works and likely to be in very short supply with most going to the war effort. The FFP scopes advantage is that you can mil rangefind at any power and your hold over points are true regardless of power which is a big advantage. I have looked at the Nightforce scopes and they are great scopes and can be found on line several places and in some better sporting goods stores do a search on line and you will find the Nightforce web site which shows models. USOptics scopes are basically Custom Built top of the line it doesnt get any better than this scopes. Schmidt Bender scopes are the ones that won out in the U.S. Marine Corp testing and are the new issue Marine sniper scope and are available here on SWFA. I was at SWFA yesterday and got to hold one and look at it closely and OH MY GOD if I could afford it I would buy it - it is awesome. So we have good better and best but each step up cost more and for most guys the Leupold Mark 4 is a great scope and it is what most police snipers use throughout the US and it is what the Army uses on most of its sniper rifles (model varies by use.) Dont forget to check samplelist for bargains like:
