Not meaning to sound like an optics snob, I'm not, but I regard the cheaper scopes as throwaways if they don't work or live up to expectations. I have a $39.95 bushnell sportview on a ML'er that works well and holds POI.......does the job but if it ever went wonky I'd just pitch it and move on. Usually under $100 scopes I don't figure are even worth sending in and spending shipping on. If your buddy approaches it from that angle he won't go wrong. I always encourage scope shoppers to at least figure on $200 to get optics that will be satisfactory or if not provide some level of service or warranty. That said I've had a few cheapies really serve me well. Simmons in particular has meade instrument handling service and warranty, never been on my shortlist of service providers.

The Whitetail Classic dates back to the good days of Simmons before they sold to Blount before Blount sold them to ATK and before ATK sold them to Meade (I may have missed a sell or two). The Whitetail Classic is before the investment bankers were more concerned about how to make Simmons look profitable on paper, the Whitetail Classic was made when they did not plan on selling the company, when they were actually interested in the quality of their products. Simmons has made many very good scopes for the money like the original 44-Mag, the original Aetec and the Whitetail Classic. It is worth two times what you can get them for today......easily.

The Whitetail Expedition is another of the "good" ones.
The founders of Simmons came from tasco and had learned the ins and outs of the business first hand. Much like tasco, Simmons offered the consumer a diverse line of products spanning low end Wal-Mart junk up to mid-high end quality products.
Once the company was purchased by investment bankers that had no clue which end of the scope to look through, things really went down hill in a hurry. They took the marque products and cheapened them significantly by going to different factories. Then they would offer distributors these already established products at 50% and they sold huge quantities. The distributors and dealers were not aware that the product was not the same as they had previously bought until the consumers started bringing them back. Well you can only do that one time per model. First they killed the 44-Mag, then the Aetec by doing this "bait and switch" tactic. Then just prior to the Simmons name being Mud, they sold the company to some unsuspecting recipient that just looked at their financial statement and saw that the company was very profitable, but what they did not know was that profit came at a huge cost. This happened a few more times and finally word was out and the chain was finally broken when Meade purchased Simmons. They pretty much discontinued everything and reinvented the products from the ground up with U.S. engineers and set up their own factories to build the new products. Production delays and a large learning curve have delayed their progress, the products that are coming in now that are Meade engineered are very good. Once they get all the products to market we will see a rebirth of Simmons.
Meade also purchased Weaver and Redfield under the same circumstances and is in the process of turning these companies around too.
Coincidently we may currently be witnessing the beginning of the cycle with Bushnell/tasco as they were recently sold......to investment bankers.
