How hard of a bump does it take to knock a scope off center? I have a 7mm wsm with a meopta 3-12x56 which has proven to be the best scope i have ever owned. I zeroed the scope 1" high at 100 yds at the beginning of season and it has remained zeroed until I missed a bobcat thursday at about 150 yards. I shot the gun this morning and found iit shooting 5" to the right and about 3" low at 60 yds. I have bumped it a couple of times in the truck and a couple were kinda hard but i didnt know it would knock it off this far. Is this normal or do I have something else goiung on. I have had the scope on my rifle for 2 seasons and have killed 4 deer out to 180 yardsand it has always been right on. Im new but any help would be appreciated. |

There are certain types of vibrations and or shocks to a scope that can happen during transport as well as during hunting seasons travelling that can knock a scopes zero. These are generally due to shocks that are not typical to the recoil that a scope was designed to tolerate. Air Guns can KILL a good scope for this very reason.

I know that some police sharpshooters claim that the rigors of being locked in the trunk of a squad car (vibration) is as detrimental to a zero as anything else. Even in a padded case! Also, just because your zero is off doesn't necessarily implicate the scope. Base, rings, barrel and bedding are still suspects...

air travel can also wreak havoc on a scope...At the very least it's a good excuse for more range time

I checked all the mounts and bases and all were tight. I guess the bump knocked it off. I have heard about knocking them of center but i figured a moa or two, i never thought you couuld bump one off so far. going to the range to zero inn tomorrow. thanks for the help.

amen to that, but at least you can put it in the gun rack in the back window and stop on a dirt road and shoot a beer can to get back on target.

No question a hard knock can move the point of impact, more frequently by moving the rings slightly and secondarily the internals of the scope. Re-zero and see how it goes. What type of mounts and rings are you using and what brand of rifle is it?

I've driven thousands of miles in Wyoming and aside from the Interstate, never actually encountered anything that any reasonable person would call a road. Usually you just drive through the sagebrush in the general direction you wish to go!

Its been in my experience and it may only be me......but its not so much the bump but the location of the bump on the scope itself. Near the ring mounts or the diopter (eye piece) seem to make a lot more difference than on the objective end.

Dale, you may either hit the <Esc> key or pull down the "View" menu and select the "Stop" option to freeze her... That is if you want to save your eyes! |
