How do I determine whether I need Low, Medium, or High rings for my rifle? Also, what's the Pros/Cons between a one-piece mount and a two-piece mount? I have a left-hand Browning A-bolt Hunter in .270WSM. I am planning to mount a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9X40 to this rifle. Could you recommend a good set of mounts and rings for this set-up?

Trial and error usually. I think Leupold has (or had) a scope/mount guide.
The advantage of two piece mounts is hand clearance for single loading, and lower weight. The advantage of one piece is the rings will line up the first time you put it together. Since your needs are not extraordinary, most any brand will do. |

TALLEY RINGS AND BASES OR CONETROL RINGS AND BASES ARE TWO OF THE BEST IN QUALITY FOR SCOPE MOUNTS. LOW RINGS WILL BE THE SIZE YOU WILL NEED WITH THE SMALL 40MM OBJECTIVE LENSE AND 1 INCH SIZE RINGS. THEY WILL COST YOU A LITTLE MORE BUT WE ALWAYS GET WHAT WE PAY FOR IS A PHRASE I LIKE TO REMEMBER WHEN DEALING WITH GUNS, RIFLESCOPES, AND SCOPE MOUNTING EQUIP. I ALWAYS LIKE TO MOUNT A SCOPE AS LOW AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE IT GIVES ME MORE CHEEK TO RIFLESTOCK CONTACT WHICH HELPS FOR ACCURACY. |

I agree with Sako 75 SS wih regards to the ring height you will need for the Elite 3200 you are going to use. Talley and Conetrol are considered the best with regards to quality ad strengh. I'm not quite sure what hangfire is referring to when he stated that when you use a one pc. mount the the rings will align themselves. I have mounted more scopes than I can remember for my own rifles and most of my friends and any customer who purchased rifles, scopes and mounts from the gunshop that I worked at. Leupold makes several different types of 2 pc. mounts for your Browning A-Bolt. Last but not least, remember to use BLUE Locktite on the base mount screws if you are going to do the job yourself. If you take the job to your local shop make sure they use the BLUE or bring your own.

Thanks for all the advice. I ended up going with a set of Leupold 2-piece mounts and rings, only because of name recognition. I also went with the Medium height rings. I am happy how it turned out. The rifle butt sits nicely in the crease of my shoulder and it doesn't feel like I have to squeeze down to look through the scope. The scope comes down to within about 3/16" above the barrell. Also, I think the 2-piece mounts allows more access to hand load shells into the gun. And with the matte finish, the mounts blend right in. The comment about using Loctite-strangely on the installation instruction for the mounts it recommended not using a threadlocker, but to use a light oil on the threads. I torqued them down tight, but I will keep an eye on it to see if they loosen. Thanks again everyone. |
