I won a 257wby vanguard the other night at the rmef dinner just what I need a nother rifle without a scope so keeping it under 300 is tough since I think I need at least a 14 power to do that caliber justice. Looking at either the buckmasters 4.5-14 or the fullfield 4.5-14 and am open to other suggestions.

You will never be happy with that Vanguard.........just send it to me and I'll make sure you never have to see it again. LOL. Check out SWFA's website. You may like the Nikon Team Primos for $199. I believe this is the same as last years Monarch. Not the power you were looking for, but with a BDC reticle, and great glass, it would be hard to pass up. It would help to know what the intended use is for this rifle. The 3-9 power is usually more than enough for hunting at any typical ranges. When I shoot to 4-600 yards I only turn my 4.5-14 up to about 10. But you have to make the final decision on what you really want.

It's been out of the box and played with, or looked over next to my other scopes and whatever, but I don't have the rings to mount it with yet. Also the weather here is crap. Nice days when I work, and crappy days off. I work a 4 on 4 off schedule, and still can't find a decent day to shoot.

I will not tell you that it's the scope that my Conquest is, but pretty close optically, nice turrets with positive clicks, and knobs that are easy to grab. The eye box is pretty forgiving, maybe more so than my Conquest, probably due to a bigger exit pupil. My Conquest is a 4.5-14 though. On equal powers the eyebox is pretty close.

I would probably be all over that but I have more than enough 3-9s I really like shooting on a higher power even sighting in at 100 yds I like to be on 7 or 8 everyone is different.
I also am not real big on the bdc at least not in something that flat shooting.

that nikon will beat the burris optically - hands down
do you WANT adjustible objective? They can be a pain in the rear sometimes.
a 3x9x40 would be plenty, unless you are needing many shots over 400 yrds or so.
the nikon UCC, elite 4200, and team primos would be fine additions to that rifle.
my 2 cents.

The only other thing I can think of is to spend more money. This would give you more power, a plex reticle, and no adjustable objective. However, its out of your budget. I get away with my side focus on the Conquest though by just setting it on the infinity mark. With the conquest I notice no real disadvantage until I get inside 50 yards. Where I hunt that will probably never happen. But I leave my scope on 10x also.
You could also look into the Leupold VX I line, in a 3-12. It has no AO, but also has no clicks, just turrets held by friction. I personally can't stand this kind of turret, but everyone has their own tastes. The Leupy is inside the budget though.
Oh my, I just led someone to a gold ring on OT, please be gentle fellas. Edited by trigger29 - March/26/2008 at 00:32 |
