I was able too finally go out and shoot monday, since bad a.m weather prevented us from putting up the 1200+ flags of our veterans I thought this would be a good time to exercise my 2a right that they helped ensure. My question is it better to use sandbags or a rifle rest when sighting in a rifle. this is the first time that I have actually sighted in a rifle and once I got it on paper the groups were not real tight, they would be ok to hunt with, but I know it should be better, I'm shooting a t/c encore 300 win. mag with a leup. 4.5x14 at 200yds. I'll probably have more questions later so thanks in advance

It will depend to some extent on what you plan to use for your bench. If you plan to keep it simple and use your truck hood or tail gate then the bags is the way to go. If you plan to have a bench and chair then either will work very well but the bags will cost less. I have a custom built bench with adjustable rest that I use most of the time, but I plan to get some new bags soon for times when I want to do a spot check and not haul the bench around. If you are not going to do alot of target shooting it may not be practicle to have a sled sitting around for a once or twice a year call. Let us know what you decide. Good luck! |

I have been using a Harris Bipod and a rear bag for my shooting for a few years now.
Works well for me.

well I was using a led sled, it did absorb alot of the recoil but it seemed that after the shot when I reloaded and seated the rifle it was way off the target due to the recoil, just wondering if sandbags are better if for nothing else just for reaiming the rifle. I am also concerned at the fact that my eye was to the scope to get a good field of view

9-point, theoretically, a mechanical rest, properly sized for your forearm width, along with a rear bag is superior to sandbags only. Incidentally, I personally don't like the lead sled as far as mechanical rests goes, because it doesn't position the rifle the way I prefer it per my own bench shooting form. However, I believe your results will be more dependent on your bench shooting technique than whether you shoot off sandbags or a rest.

thanks for the replys, Im not sure I like the led sled either, the forearm sits loose in the front rest, and with my cheek peice on the butt it dosent seat well in the rear rest, but as I said it did reduce alot of the recoil, and as mentioned earlier, once I found the paper at 200 yards I was able to put alot of holes in an 8 inch target(not a 10in target)I know I have more work to do, but thats half the fun.

I used a lead sled for a while. Works great for sighting in, but I found my technique suffered when I used it. I also have a mechanical front rest I shoot off of. I prefer the rest or bipod myself.

For an inexpensive unit I use a Redhead Magnum ... I have 2 ,,, one I use for sighting and leveling ... the other for firing . Never thought of putting a barbell on any ... would fit ... but I'm not gonna lug it around . I get them off Ebay for $32.00 shipped from peeweeherman . All steel .. no plastic trash and extremely heavy duty . Of course the ole sandbag is needed sometimes . I added wide velcro strips to both to hold down the rifle ... works fabulous and any butt-stock fits well in them . The buttstock end is different than this pic . Much better than pictured ... they must have update/upgraded it since this was taken . The buttstock fits in a deep notch padded area secured 3 ways and tight but padded . The levelers are very heavy duty and precise . If you're looking for all steel /super strong for alot less ... check them out . They even come with a very precise magnetic level .

I'm thinking of getting the "dual" lead sled. Anyone used that? I really like the looks of that Shooter Ridge rest. Does it "slide" on the shooting table at all? Have heard that the lead sled has a tendency to move on the table without 50lbs of lead shot. Right now, I am using a rice and sand filled shooting rest with two sand bags for rear rest.

Last year I made a shooting table and needed a rest to go on it. I ended up purchasing a TSI (Target Shooters Inc.) rest. I like it alot. It's easily taken down for storage or transport. I just toss a bag or two of lead shot on the rails. Works like a charm. www.targetshooting.com

That's a really nice rest, but hefty price tag for me. I would have to sell one of my blonde daughters into slavery to afford that and all the rifle "upgrades" I am working on. Actually, come to think of it, I have one who is just hanging around the house, not doing much... that may be an option.

I tried one of these on a whim and absolutely love it, filled it with quartz sand and been shooting ever since.
I generally shoot bipod and rear squeeze bag but for everything without a bipod this is the most stable I have seen.
I even bought one of their small ones to take into the woods.
