Considering you are using premium ammo. And your shots are within 75 yards....or farther if you have had sucess from greater distances.

The locals seem to like 158 lead or exposed lead bullets. The stuff for humans may break up to easy.

My reason for asking is: I found a scope mount for mt Ruger GP100. I was considering getting another barrel for my encore, but buy the time I got the grips and whatnot it would be around $300....so I figgered I'd try what I already had and see how I liked it. Doe hunting around here sometimes gets a little vanilla. |

Try the new hornady leverevolution ammo. It is great in the 45-70. It can out in .357 and .44mag not to long ago.

ST is right, if I were to use a .357 I'd definately use the Hornady ammo.

I used 140gr Speer JHP and dropped an 8 pointer just about in it's tracks from 25-30 yards. Shot from a S&W Mod. 28, 6 inch barrel. Shot was in center mass. The round was a handload with WW296 powder, can't remember the charge weight.

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

I'd go heavy for caliber ( 180 gr.s) and keep shots in bow range

You want a long barrel and no gap then to get the numbers up.

I'm not recommending this necessarily but, with proper hand loading (11.5 gr. 2400, CCI or Winchester Lg Pistol Magnum primers, and 180 gr. Hornady XTPs) I can make my 4" .357 Magnum S&W 686+ Mountain Gun legal for all big game (including elk and moose) in Wyoming and Utah.
I think I would stick with deer, antelope, and perhaps mountain lion with that gun/load but, it is legal. |

The 180 XTP's are a great bullet for deer hunting. I would stay within fifty yards.
My Smith is a 4" M28 and shoots accurately with the Hornady's. I use Blue Dot. Edited by tahqua - November/03/2008 at 19:43 |

I have used 180 gr. Corbons out of my Marlin. I have droped deer and hogs at 50-60 yards with no problem. I dont know if it makes a huge difference out of your pistol but the caliber will do the trick.

I've used S&W 6" 686 at about 70yds. Not sure I would want to go further, but believe it will handle it.
