I just acquired a really nice Cooper Varmint Extreme in .223. Its one of the first 25
Dan Cooper made in 1993. I'am really stoked as I haven't had a nice varmint gun since college and my 220 Swift. I'll be punching paper and going for four legged varmints next spring. I'll be hand loading eventually. I would like to buy a really nice scope that incorporates range finding and is variable. I'am a mature sort of guy (I'am a grandpa) that has to wear glasses all the time. My budget is up to $1200 or so. I would figure on zeroing at 200 yards and shooting out to maybe 1000 yards. So.....given all this I would sure appreciate some input. I have read tons of posts here and they all are really informative but everyones the same (we love to shoot) and different (gun, ammo, locale, age etc.) so I am asking the "newbie" question for me.
Thanks
Mark
PS Any of you in the Denver metro area ?

I would get a tactical scope in the 14 to 18x high end range with a good mildot reticle. THis would be a very nice scope and priced just right. I would add a 20 MOA one piece base like a badger or TPS and add some heavy duty rings
You could go with the Leupold, but it does not have near the glass quality of the IOR.
ALso the Bushnell 6500. IT will have better glass than the Leupold, but not as good as the IOR

By any chance do you know what the twist rate is for your rifling?

My Gosh...for a bunch of gun toting, varmint shooting, paper punching folks you sure hand out a warm welcome !!! Thanks to all of you and I will keep you appraised of what I do about a scope and how the gun and scope shoot together. As of right now I do not know the twist rate of the barrel however I intend to find out as soon as the rifle arrives which is probably a week to ten days out.
Thanks Again
Mark

Welcome to the OT!
you cannot go wrong with the above. The Leupold 8,5-25x50 is also a great scope out to those distances.
Please let us know how she shoots.

Welcome to the OT. Glad you stopped in.
May want to look at this. Not a lot of elevation adjustment, but you can use the reticle, and dial up when you run out of reticle.
This may work also, but I don't know how much elevation it has, and their site is down right now.

Well the new Cooper is here and now I have to make that hard, hard decision on
what scope to buy for it. I have scaled back my budget to that $500 to $800 range as I have also acquired another Cooper model 57 in 22 mag and a early Oregon Ruger model 82 Sportster in 22lr. Both of these will be needing scopes also. By the way Belt Feed the twist on the .223 is one in fourteen. So......any additional ideas before I plunk down that hard earned cash ?
Thanks
Mark

Well with a 1 in 14 twist that means you will have to shoot very light bullets in the 40 to 45 grain size or smaller. Which also means shooting to 1000 yards is out as you need 80 to 90 grainers to do that and you would need a 1-7 twist to use those bullets. 300 to 400 yards will probably be all those small bullets will be capable of doing consistently. I would probably still look at one of those bushnell 6500s in 2.5-16x.

My feelings exactly. They look like a really good value. I appreciate your input on the the appropriate weight bullets. I have a new Dillon reloader to set up along with all this other fun. My learning curve is going to fairly steep this winter. However when you stop learning you really get old in a hurry !!!

Supertool is correct about the twist rate and bullit weight, as well as the maximum effective range of your rifle. With that in mind, elevation adjustment shouldn't be an issue and you may not need to go over 16x for a scope, JMHO.
