Good morning all,
Will any rifle that is chambered for a .22LR accept .17 mach 2 rounds without any modification to the .22 LR rifle?

Thanks,
Rhett

is there a reason why you would want to do that? the bullet diameters are obviously different, accuracy would be poor at best, this sounds dangerous to me.

.17 Mach 2 is nothing more than .22LR necked down to .17 caliber.  Any bolt action rifle chambered in .22LR can be modified to .17 M2 by only changing out the barrel.  The same magazines for .22LR will work with .17 M2, and the bolt face is exactly the same, since they have the same rim diameter and thickness.  With a blowback style semiauto like a 10/22, to prevent case rupture, the bolt needs to have more mass for the .17 M2 due to the increased pressure and subsequent increased bolt acceleration.

Obviously, you can't simply fire .17 M2 ammo in a .22LR safely because of the 0.047" difference in bore diameter, which is huge!  You could chamber the .17, fire it, and it would go bang, but you wouldn't get any accuracy because the .177 bullet wouldn't seal in the much larger .224 bore, and it would be a dangerous practice.

This is bad mojo. Please don't try it. Rifledude pretty much summed it up.

I doubt it would be enought power to blow the gun up. Accuracy would be non existant.  I would be a lot more worried about the idea if one dropped a 243 cartridge in a .308 and fired it as there is so much more energy involved.  I doubt I would even consider doing it unless there was no 22 ammo available plus extreme circumstances.

The way its written makes me wonder if he realizes 22 and 17 are different sizes.

I hesitate to say, but in a matter like this, I can't be too clear. DON'T TRY IT!

if you watch the outdoor channel enough  they have that segment where they torture guns and they wanted to see how many different shells they could run through a gun before it malfunctioned or blew up. i think they used a 30-06, and shot various calibers through it starting with .223 i believe. they made it to .270 or 7-08 before they had serious problems.
