I took a little buck and a coyote this year with 210gr VLD's from my 300 win mag. The bullets did a nice job. The exit on the deer was maybe half beseball size the exit on the coyote was umm pie plate size.Both were DRT. the entrance were very small. on the deer i had to find it from the inside.

Yes they are still hollowpoints. I believe they have a bit thicker jacket though.

If a 7mm mag using a VLD hunting bullet at about 3000 fps can successfully down an elk at 700-925 yards as seen on the Berger web site video and on TV, then it shouldn`t be any problem for a lowly shorty barreled 300 WSM using a 190 gr VLD at roughly 2700-2800 fps MV at a distance of 400-500 yards. With no Huskeeeeemaw scope either. I will in no way try a 700-900 yard shot on elk. I like to stalk a little.
I am very intrigued about the non-pass through VLD shrapnel concept for vitals shock and large wound channels. And I would prefer the DRT notion rather than tracking the animal.

I've looked around the web but can't get a head-on pic to see if they're HP's or not. The reason I'm asking is that I was reading an article last evening by Al Miller in Handloader #124('86) about the 9.3x62mm. In it he mentions a bullet that was made by Norma called a Protective Point Cavity(PPC). In 9.3 it weighed 232gr. He goes on to describe its design and the idea behind that design. The performance of the PPC on game,as he describes it,gave the same performance on game as is being described today in the gun rags and online about the VLD. No one seems to know why the VLD's perform as they do,at least the last time I read anything about them. Just wondering if the two bullets are similar.

I don`t know if that 9.3 bullet has any similarities to the VLD`s.
I do happen to know why the VLD`s perform the way they do, especially at the extended longer ranges. For the heck of it, I just did a little experiment with two different bullets on the Hornady external ballistics table.
Let`s assume one has a 30-378 using a 180 gr Barnes TSX, which has a BC of .453, shooting at a MV of 3400 fps. Beginning at the 500 yard mark, here are the downrange velocity #`s.
500 yards 600 yards 700 yards 800 yards 900 yards 1000 yards
2359 fps 2178 fps 2005 fps 1840 fps 1685 fps 1541 fps
From a 30 cal 185 Berger VLD hunting bullet with a BC of .549 at a muzzle velocity of say 2800 fps, using as an example from what I know I can easily get from my 300 WSM compact.
500 yards 600 yards 700 yards 800 yards 900 yards 1000 yards
2028 fps 1891 fps 1760 fps 1675 fps 1519 fps 1411 fps
From the 30-378, the Barnes TSX has a 600 fps MV advantage, but at the 1000 yard mark, the VLD closes that gap way down to within 130 fps. Very interesting uh?
The 1000 yard flight time for the 3400 fps Barnes TSX is..........1.21 seconds
" " " " " " " 2800 fps VLD is......................1.42 seconds
The VLD`s have a great (very low drag) ogive design. That 3400 fps 180 gr Barnes TSX, at the 1000 yard mark, loses more than double its original MV with 1541 fps.
In this example the 2800 fps VLD loses almost double its original velocity, with 1411 fps at the 1000 yard mark.
As Berger did in their video, in comparing a high BC VLD at 3000 fps from a 7mm Rem mag vs the same 3400 fps from a 30 cal TSX, the 7mm VLD easily overcomes the 30-378`s velocity #`s before the 1000 yard mark as the graph shows on the Berger web site video.

If I recall correctly,(it doesn't happen often, so I could be wrong.) Walt Berger told me that the very small opening in the hollowpoint section takes a bit of time to open up. This is why they can penetrate a couple inches before they open up. Once that front part of the bullet can't take the pressure anymore, the hollowpoint opens up, and the bullet will shed 40-80% of it's weight, much like any lightly constructed, non bonded bullet.

THANKS t. That's how Al Miller describes the terminal ballistics of the PPC:
"The PPC's design is intriguing. Where the ordinary hollowpoint is just that,the PPC's jacket curls over the rim of the orfice in the bullet's nose and extends down into the cavity a tad,lining the inside of the lip,reinforcing it but leaving a small amount of lead showing at the bottom of the hollow. In addition,the bullet's jacket thickness thickens markedly from nose to base. The base itself is soild and a heavy cannelure cinches jacket to core.
The idea behind the PPC's configuration is that the reinforced hollow nose will delay any tendency of the bullet to mushrom until it has had a chance to penetrate a few inches. Once inside the animal's body,expansion takes place with more violence than usual but because of the stout jacket,the soft core peels back instead of wrenching apart. the result should be a bullet with truly controlled expansion,one which will penetrate deeper than most hollwpoints,expand dramatically but hold together and retain more of its weight than hollowpoints usually do"
He goes on to describe a report on bullet performance on moose in Sweden by Norma saying the bullets,shot a distances from 18 to 215 meters,held together beautifully,retained about 2/3rds their original weight,and expanded as designed to. He also says that they are very accurate.
