Hey We are planning a trip to Canada for some hunting. One of the things we want to know is if foreigners can buy ammunition in Canada if we need to?

Dogger should know and I would also shoot an email to the outfitter requesting the info as well. If you are concerned about losing ammo or you won't be able to purchase ammo, check to see if the outfitter will buy some in advance just in case.

Yes you can buy rifle ammo in Canada you need to get a confirmed non residents firearms declaration permit you can look on line or get it through your outfitter. you need to do this any way for your firearm and ammo. was curious and got this from Canada regs.

This site should tell you all you need to know. The program is federally regulated so should be consistent for all provinces. Make sure to check out mag restrictions on centre-fire semi-auto rifles - usually not an issue on normal hunting arms.
As rifle looney has started yuo can but ammo here. This is an excerpt:
Buying or Importing AmmunitionA valid PAL, a confirmed Non-Resident Firearm Declaration or a Temporary Borrowing Licence (for Non-Residents) will allow you to buy ammunition in Canada. As well, you may bring limited amounts into Canada with you. (200 rounds last I looked) Edited by Dogger - March/04/2009 at 07:13 |

Allow extra time to go through customs in Canada if you have a connecting flight. Last year I flew into Vancouver and went through customs there and almost missed my connecting flight to Prince Rupert. Expect the baggage checking people to have to call a manager and have no idea how to procede.

Lots of info here shooter4. What Province will you be hunting? Will try to hook you up with local Ministry officials (if you're using a guide/outfitter service they should look after this for you).
Firearms are federal but with the exception of migratory birds hunting licences are Provincially regulated. Edited by Dogger - March/05/2009 at 14:44 |

I went to Manitoba this past november, fill out your firearm document, but don't sign it until you are in front of the canda customs agent. keep your ammo in your luggage, not with the gun.
if I ever go back, do your shopping in the big towns, cause the little towns are very expensive - cokes and snacks was very high. whiskey was higher than normal and Coors Light was 39.00 per case for 12 oz cans - 1/2 gallon of Crown was 63.00
be prepared for luggage fee's going and coming, your rifle case is considered over size luggage 80.00 etc..

Not as popular where I am for sure. Candied beaver tails and chocolate moose droppings are more to our taste!
Seriously, except for Taco Bell's that I see around I don't recall seeing any Mexican food type restaurants (but I haven't actively looked for any either). The younger folks seem more adventurous that way. I know tortilla chips and salsa are popular snack items.
Update: just did a quick look in the local retaurant directory for Toronto and found 20 listings. They are scattered all over the city (they DO NOT include Taco Bell). Never knew.... Edited by Dogger - March/06/2009 at 14:58 |

When I worked for Brown and Root in Houston, Tx I had a supervisor who was retiring. I asked what he was going to do and he said "I'm going to pack up my car, tie a taco to the radio aerial (we called them aerials then) and I'm going drive NORTH until I find a place where somebody asks me what that is hanging from my antenna and after I tell them, they still don't know".
