Ok I am new here and having been learnign alot for you guys so thanks....
I am looking to set up a .50 cal Savage Smokeless
Now I want to keep it in a budget of 200 CAD since I am in canada. right now 200USD costs me 260CAD so our dollar isnt that great!

I can get a Simmons Master Aetec 2.8 -10 x 44.......for 200.  Good option??
The Elite 3200 4-12 x40 is gonna cost me close to 400.

What are some other suitable options that will be helpful.
Mostly after deer at 200 yards tops if i figure out my gun at that long of a distance.

Any other info is helpful. I have read i dont need that much magnifiaction either for a muzzleloader.?!
Just clear and bright for low loight conditions is my main concern.
thanks

Check out the links below.  The first has some recommendations for scopes and lots of info on the Savage smokless muzzeloader.  The second is a newer version of the same forum with a section for Savage muzzrloaders. It appears that they are very hard on scopes especially those with front parallax adjustments.  I would get something with a good warranty and lots of eye relief.  The lower end Burris, Bushnell, Vortex or Sightron scopes should be in your price range.  The Leupolds may be a little too pricey unless you can find a deal on a used one.  The Nikon 3-9x Primos on the Sample list for $179 is considered a good scope but only has a 90 day warranty.

If you are primarily using the gun for hunting and want a variable something between 1-4x and 3-9 or less is best.  If you are target shooting than I would probably go higher magnification.  Higher magnification generally costs more money for the same quality.

A 3x9 is certainly more magnification than you really need for this rifle. A 1x3, to a 4x, to a 5x, is all you would need for anything to 200 yards or less.

For under $200, look at the 1-3x20 Weaver V3. Great FOVs, both eyes open aiming and very fast to acquire the target!

If you plan on actually practicing and target shooting at 200 yards and beyond then my suggestion would certainly be to go with a 3-9x scope.  There is a little saying in archery circles that goes "Aim big, miss big. Aim small, miss small."

I have a Savage 10ML and it will put shots within a 3" circle easy at 200 yards.  Depending on the reticle that you choose I think you would have a hard time doing that with a 4x or 5x scope. Visit the dougsmessageboards.proboards.com site often and ask questions.  Those guys are all eager to help.  However your question concering a scope choice is going to be a tough one based on your limited funds.  Maybe a 3-9x42 Sightron SI might fit the bill.

Djzed, hi, I also live in Canuk land. Leu has a 1-4 and a 2-7 for shotgun/muzzle stuffers and both are under $300 Can. pesos. I use the 1-4 on a 450 Marlin lever gun and am very happy with it. If that recoil doesn't kill a scope I don't think a front loader will do the damage. Mr Dougedwards, I'm impressed with a muzzle gun doing 3"@200. I shoot a caplock, no scope, so limit myself to 100. I'd be happy getting that at 100. Just as a matter of scopes though, a 6x will easily do 5 into under 1 1/2"@200. If the rifle is capable of the accuracy I don't think you need higher magnification at that range. For hunting I find a 4x plenty for anything out to 200.

+1
I have the savage and I bought a signature 1.5x6 for it.  It would work fine for hunting, but it isn't much help in load development or group shooting at 200 yards.  I ended up buying a new 3-9x40 primos/monarch and am very satisfied.  4" eye relief is nice, because this gun is a stiff kicker.  Bought the new instead of a samplelist scope for the extra assurance of new warranty coverage.  That scope is just right for that gun, in my opinion.

3-9 is definately not too much mag for the Savage 10ML-II.  This aint your daddy's muzzleloader and is definately a 200 yd+ weapon in competent hands.  Get the best scope you can afford.  In your price range I would look at the Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 or if you can spend about $20 more then the Elite 3200 3-10x40 SA (Short Action)...it has about 1/2" more eye relief then the 3-9.

I would also focus on good steel bases and rings.  Warne is a good choice.

I'd suggest a fixed 6x Weaver sight at 100 and figure about 10 in drop at 200 check to see how this corresponds to your bullet weight and powder charge.

A fixed 6x would be a good choice.  What load you plan to shoot out of your Savage 10ML-II?  Even a mild book recommended load of 42g N110 will push a .452 dia 250g bullet in a sabot around 2300 fps.  With a 250g SST for example this would give you a 6" MPBR of around 210 yds or so.  With such a load I would personally sight in for dead on at about 170 yds.  You'd never be more than +/- 3" from the muzzle out to about 210 yds.

I think you would find this to be a good scope for your application in your price range.

I am only allowed to use a muzzleloader except late antlerless so I have a nikon Omega with BDC reticle but most scopes in the 3-9 range are a good power range and I really think a fixed 6x would be plenty. On of my boys uses a 4.5-14 but he likes to compare the racks to select which ones he wants to leave for next year. I have a fixed 6x that I am reallly thinking about putting onto my musket but I have killed lots of deer wiht the 3-9 Omega even though the glass is not real good the scope is deadly.
