I recently acquired a BSA 12-36X50 spotting scope.  It was cheap and I thought my requirements were limited enough that a cheap scope would be adequate.  I took it to the range and was sorely disappointed.  It could make out .30 caliber holes on blaze orange targets but was difficult to make out holes on black targets.  I couldn't see .22 caliber holes at all.  I couldn't read the 8,9,10 on the targets.  This was on a bright sunny day.  It just didn't have a sharp enough image.

So I don't want to spend much money but was thinking of upping my investment to $200 tops.  If $200 is not enough, I will just wait for the cease fire and walk out to my targets.  But if I'm going to spend $200, I want to be able to make out .22 caliber holes at 200, not 100 yards.  Any suggestions?  Anybody have any experience with the Bushnell Trophy series?  Thanks.

The Bushnell Trophy series is a good, clear, highly functional scope.  It would be worth the investment. If you don't mind weight, size, and a lack of weatherproofing, the Bushnell Discoverer is an excellent scope and can usually be found for aroung $230

What if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

I don't really see any purpose the BSA spotter will be suited for. No matter how simple. The discoverer's will be better. Also check out some Burris models.
