I have been reading and reading for about a week now trying to find a scope. I have a savage 22-250 with 26" heavy barrel I need a scope for. I'm not sure for the price range they even make a scope that will work for what I need so help me pick the best with what I have to work with. Thanks
What the gun will be used for: Coyotes 100-400yds deer at under 100 yds Long range object shooting, milk jugs, cans, propane tanks max 400yds What I would like for $400 and under: Have a nice view at 300-400 yds but be able to adjust down for a 50-75 yard shot on deer Evening and night shooting Not sure on the bdc rec the mildot or Ill dot looks like it would work better for me. |

Nikon Monarch makes a very nice 2.5-10 w/mil-dot in your price range, but no illuminated reticle. Hard to get all you are asking for at $400.00 and under and still have good glass.

Weaver Grand Slam 4.5-14x40 with either a Dual-X or Ballistic-X reticle is probably the best choice in the under $400 range.
A lower magnification would also be good option and Weaver Grand Slam 3-10x40 is an even more cost effective option. Keep in mind that you do not want to skimp out on rings and bases, so make sure you have some fund available for that. Just for the record, I also have a heavy barrel Savage in 22-250, although mine is a range gun that I use to test scopes. Normally, it has Sightron S2 Big Sky 6-24x42 scope on it. ILya

The Sightron SII 4.5-14X42 with the HHR reticle would be another good one.

Ok so after looking I think I can benefit from a 50mm over the 40mm more then I had originally thought. So after looking for 50mm in every brand it looks like the vortex has mostly all that I want. I can find others but not with any form of BDC recticle other then this vortex.
Thoughts? http://swfa.com/Vortex-65-20x50-Viper-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P13286.aspx |

If you go with a BCD on a 300 Win Mag you will need a Laser Range finder to make it useful. The BCDs that I have are not the best curve for the flat shooting 300 Win Mag. To make use of them very accurate ranging is needed. To get a good scope and rangefinder you will need a lot higher budget. You would be better served with the scope like Koshkin recomended in the Weaver Grand Slam. IMO!

Remember, a 50mm is going to add more weight to an already heavy rifle. I'm looking at Weaver Grand Slam in 6-20X (<$400) as a replacement for the 20X SS that's currently on my Remington SPS Varmint, a 26" heavy-barrel .22-250.
Talley lightweight one-piece bases/rings are good and will save a couple of ounces.

That is the exact rifle I have, except U use a different stock. There are a lot of excellent choices as far bases and rings go. I have had very good luck with TPS products. EGW bases are also worth a look. ILya

Koshkin can you shed any light on the difference between different models of TPS rings?

No they all look about the same to me having never seen them first hand, but there are different models and I'm wondeering what the difference is between the HRT and the TSR & TSR"W" and since there is no picture of what a dual roatary dovetail ring is one can only imagine. The HRT and TSR rings look pretty good however I'm used to Badger and Warne so I'm all about what works.

TSR and TSR "W" are the same except for the size of the crossbolt. "W" stands for Weaver, so these will fit Weaver bases, while the original TSR will not (most of my TPS rings are TSR). HRT rings are essentially the same as TSR, but are rounded off for a more conventional look. Also, I think HRT rings have "weaver"-sized crossbolt. My next purchase of TPS rings will probably be a set of TSRs. Vertically split rings are new and I have not played with them yet. I think most of their models are available in both steel and aluminum versions. I have a set of both and for all practical purposes, the only difference is weight. If you buy a set, please make sure you mount them per instructions. I have seen a couple of people who were convinced that all rings work the same way mangle their scope tubes. ILya
