What magnification would you recommend for a pistol in .308 Winchester with a 15" barrel?
All shots will be between 50-150 yards.

I just sold my encore .308 pistol. I tried 2 scopes on it ........a bushnell 3200 2-6x32 and a leupold vxiii 2.5-8x32 ! The extended eye relief on pistol scopes makes them seem like they are a higher magnification IMo..............the FOV is much more limited than a regular rifle scope. If I were doing it all over again I would get the Leupold 2.5-8x32 again.............but I would not pass up a Leupold 4x either if I saw a good deal ! Really a 4x is probably all you need to 150 for deer ! I just like a little more flexibility..............although I never really shot my pistol over 6x and killed a hog at 163 yrds with it !

big handguns develop recoil forces in the dangerous game rifle class, any scope and mounts should be up to it. Unless your using something like a hornet, 222, 223 and hunting varmits, high power isn't needed. If its a resonably hard shot with a rifle at 8 power how much harder is it with a handgun. About 4x works great.

I currently have a Burris 2-7 on my 308 encore and I am very happy with it. I can shoot 1inch groups at 100yds benched pretty easy and it seems to do well in the woods at the lower powers for more light transmission.

I have a .243 in the same gun topped with the Bushy elite 2-6x. Dropped a small doe at 210 yards two weeks ago - neck shot. Using it above 4x is a pain because it has a very long (but consistant) eye relief. So your FOV is limited. I was in a ground blind and using shooting stix. I have it mounted using the TC steel mount which limits how far forward you can mount it. But I wanted a 1-piece mount. I keep the scope on 2x while hunting. If I have a long shot and have the time, then I increase power. You can try it with a Weaver style base and mount it very forward to minimize arm stretch. I have long arms for my height. My dress shirts have 37" sleeves and I have to stretch to get the scope in the right spot.
I use the Bushy Trophy XLT on my 17 HMR S&W revolver. It works well. I am not sure how well it would hold up to a .243 or .308.
