I'm looking to set up a Savage 10 or Rem. 700 BDL in .243 for ground hog hunting. Some shots will exceed 300 yds. I'm choosing the model 10 over the model 12 since it will be carried in the field a fair amount. However, I will use a bipod. Bullet of choice will be something along the lines of a 55 gr. V-Max. This setup should approach the trajectory of a 22-250 yet could be used on medium size game with 85-105gr. bullets if need be in the future. With that in mind, I'm considering the following scopes and would appreciate you input.

I have the Monarch and the 4200. I like them both. The Nikon is a little smaller and a bit sharper but the bushnell seems to be slightly brighter overall.

Since this is your first post you might not know about it but there is
a new line of Super Sniper Variables comming out soon! The
4.8-20X42 is supposed to be out around Halloween. If you do know
about the new SS and don't want to wait that long or your just not
interested in it then i would go with the Grand Slam since it will be
carried more in the field. The Grand Slam doesn't have tall
target turrets or a huge objective lense that will get in the way and
its a great scope.
For more info on the new SS comming out just click here Super Sniper Variable |

I added the Burris Signature Select since it's in the price range as well. I don't really mind the larger objective or tall turrets for carrying since it won't be in the woods. I'll have to check out the new SS. Hadn't yet read about it. I'm in a delima about the reticle type. I've done a little reading about the Mil-Dot and am wondering if it's a little much for me at this time and will only serve to clutter up my target picture. That makes the Burris Ballistic Plex attractive. However, it only comes in the 4.5-14.x42. I think I would really like a side focus model. I think the only one I've found in this price range is the Sightron. Please keep the recommendation coming.

Wow! That SS4.5-18x42 looks like exactly what I want. I particularly like the side focus and the large grip area on the magnification ring. Anyone guessing what the price might be?

I looked at a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14 last night at Bass Pro. It seemed very bright and sharp. Tonight I looked at a Sightron SII 3-6x40 along with an Elite 3200 3-9x40. The 3200 seemed much sharper. No, these aren't the magnification I'm looking to buy, but they should be representative of the glass I can expect. This leaves me wondering about the Sightrons. I'd rather have the better quality than fudge a few bucks. Opinions, contradictions? Bring them on!

Which of these has the most forgiving eye relief, is easier to align with your eye, at high magnification? Which of these have the most repeatable adjustments? How important is side focus? I need the input from those of you that have experience with these scopes. I have virtually none and need your help. Thanks.

Long range shooting with a 6mm presents some different problems than the 22's. The size of the target and it's quick movement to it's safety usually does not allow even 8 inches of target. If you can get 1 min of angle from your 55 that will be a cone of fire of 5 inches at 500 right at the max of your gun. The amount of powder necessary to get to the 4000 fps level will leave your barrel far to hot for repetitive shooting. Decrease the velocity with 87's and increase the BC at the same time, barrel heating diminishs substantially while at the same time giving you the ballastic profile of at least a 223 with 55 gr bullets. Having tried all the above scopes, in my opinion the Nikon has them beat hands down. It has the option target turrets or hunting covers 1/8" clicks and 1/8" cross hair which you will need for big marmots waiting in the shadows which will only be about 4-6" of actual target area. The super snipers are more for "tactical" type guns and you will find the larger turrets somewhat of a hinderance in the hunting field. (I catch them on the pickup seat) and hunting covers are a must. The recoil from 6's although not alot will cause a sight picture loss, and you will have to reaquire the sight picture (love military and swat jargon) Shooting a chuck while sunning themselves on a large rock is bad form-no challenge. Picking them out of the shadows is the challenge.

Dale Clifford, thanks for the advice. I am a newbie at varmint shooting and appreciate your pointers. One of my main concerns is getting the scope that is easiest to align the sight picture at high magnification. After reading some more here last night, I understand that directly correlates to the size of the exit pupil and that a larger objective is needed to increase that. With that in mind, it sounds like I would be happier with a 50mm rather than a 40-44mm objective. You can see this in the pupil size of the Burris 6.5-20x50 Fullfield II. It has the largest exit pupil at 20x. If this is going to be a deciding factor, then I'm going to have to go back and consider other scopes in the 4.5-16x50 range. Further more, by going down to a 14-16x scope, the exit pupil will be larger to begin with. The bottom line is that I want a scope that's easy to look through. Feedback??? |

The Burris 6.5-20x50 Fullfield II is looking pretty attractive at $400. Of course, if I want the Mil-Dot it's $453.

Before the Leupold TMR reticle came out my favorite long-range varmint reticle was the Ball. Mil-Dot. I have 1 on a 24 cal. rifle for long-range coyotes, and it is one of the best matchups i've ever put together-- 6-24X Signature.
Dale's right on about the 87 V-Max-- highest BC pure varmint bullet made @ .4, and oughtta do some things to varmints even right to the end of the 14.5 (or so) MOA of trajectory compensation at the lower post of the Ball. Mil-Dot. He says the challenge is to pick 'em out of the shadows-- i say it's doping the wind (>10 mph) and referencing it in the optic for 1st shot kills beyond 400, or maybe 350-- somewhere in there. Hoorraahhh |

Exit pupil while important, is not as important as cheek fit (weld). Unless you have a custom fit varmit stock the heads up type shooting as with an AR will not work. Mil-Dot and Ballistic plex cover too much of the marmot, and while work well for targets with an 18" girth do not allow for the fine adjustments for windage on varmits for my liking (although with the current rage I'm sure more will be introduced). If you want fast repeatable shots with little gun movement (since this is the biggest problem) you need a 40 gr bullet in the 3600 fps range. A 204 ruger or or .233 in 26" heavy barrel (gun wr. around 10 lbs.). Tired eye from long periods on the scope and uncomfortable shooting positions play a major role in scope selection (usually not introduced as a topic in a scope forum)

The search is over. LINK I am looking at reloading 40 Gr. V-max or Speers. It seems like the way to go with my 700 BDL w/24" 1/12" twist barrel. I'm planning on shooting Winchester 45 Gr. HPs 3600fps from Meijers for $12.99/40 until I aquire enough brass. It's supposed to shoot well. I'm anxious to get it set up and try it out. |

I've got a 6x-24x Burris Signature on my 223 700, same optics as the
Sig. Select, outstanding, of course. I really like the Signature line
of scopes, they've got excellent Flare control, they're brighter than
50mm Leupolds of the same power range, great full FOV, resolution, etc.
etc. I'd buy another in a heartbeat. IB
