Welcome to the OT
I would definitely try the 200 gr Accubond. With a ballistic coefficient of .588 it will be great for long range shooting and hunting.
What dies are you going to use?

I have 2 friends who have the 30-378's and I am just waiting for them to shoot up their $125.00 a box ammo so they will have the brass to reload. My deal is they buy the dies, bullets, brass, primers and powder and I will reload for them.
In preparation I bought a set of Forster Benchrest 2 die set
Forster makes good seating dies that support the case body when seating and keep it in line. That was the determining factor to me.
Normally I like to get a Lee Collet Neck Sizer and Redding Body Die combination but these are not available in that caliber. Second choice has always been a Redding Bushing type die but these work best with outside neck turning and that is too laborious for me on someone else's rifle. So the Forster set will get it done. RCBS will also get it done, so it is up to you.
The 200 gr Accubond is the bullet I will be loading for them for 2 reasons: both are hunters primarily and the Accubond is a hunting bullet AND the Accubond's I have loaded have been very accurate. The Berger VLD's (hunting type) get some good press and some bad. John Barsness who posts here likes them and that is a big plus. He likes them because they penetrate 2" before blowing up. I have read other threads where the complaint was penciling through and others where the complaint was no exit. I have no experience with them. The 190 gr has a ballistic coefficient of .564 and the 210 gr a BC of .62, so there is not that much of a difference from the 200 gr Accubond with a .588.
Scopes? I would put a Zeiss Conquest 4.5x14x50 RapidZ 800 (matter of fact I recommended this scope to one of the 30-378 owners and he got and I installed it). With the 200 gr Accubond at 3050 fps, the RapidZ 800 shows to be on at about 13 power and with the 180 gr TTSX at 3275 fps then you can use the reticle at it's max power of 14. That's pretty close.

Friend of mine with a Weatherby 30-378 swears by the Barnes TSX bullets. I know of two elk he's killed with them at +-250yds. He routinely practices at 600-700yds for fun with that rifle. Don't know any MOA info. He has an older Swaro scope on it. 6 x 24 or something similar I think.

Well let's look at ballistics for the 3 bullet weights
bullet / muzzle velocity / 600 yd energy / 600 yd drop / 600 yd wind drift
200 gr Accubond / 3100 fps / 2185 fpe / -55.30" / 18.72"
180 gr Accubond / 3250 fps / 1954 fpe / -52.52" / 20.90"
165 gr Accubond / 3350 fps / 1816 fpe / -50.34" / 21.67"
the sectional density of the 200 gr bullet of .301 as compared to the sectional density of the 165 gr bullet of .248 will make a big difference in the penetration also. One common thread in most all bullet failure stories is one of excessive velocity, bullets can do squirrelly things when you have close impact at above 3100 fps.
If your gunsmith recommended you shoot 168 gr bullets in a 30-378, get a new gunsmith. If he only answered your question about what is the best twist for a 168 gr bullet then he is correct. If he ever recommends shooting a 150 gr bullet, run don't walk away.
The 6x24x56 Zeiss scope is of course an excellent scope, but friggin huge! And expensive since you can only get it in a Diavari. The field of view is down to 18' and the weight is over 28 ounces. If you are only going to sit in a stand and shoot over 300 yards then you would be OK, but let something come running by at 50 yards and try to find it in that scope! Try to get on target on a monochromatic background at 200 yards, you'd need a set of open sights on top of the scope to find the target.
By contrast a 4.5x14x44 Zeiss Conquest weighs in around 17 ounces, has a field of view of 25' and will give you a better cheek weld since it can be mounted in much lower mounts (not even talking about $1,000.00 cheaper).
Sorry to be so opinionated but I reload for over 40 rifles and have seen them all. Edited by sakomato - December/23/2009 at 05:46 |

If I wanted to shoot longer ranges, I'd order a faster twist. Something like a 1 in 10". In my opinion, all that powder capacity is going to waste just to shoot 168gr bullets. I would shoot 190 gr. or higher. The 200 accubond would serve you well for elk. The berger may too, depending on what you want out of a bullet. I just took a whitetail at 388 with a 185gr. berger at 3050 fps. I got about a silver dollar sized exit. I would guess an exit would be far less likely on an elk though.
