I just got my Nikon coyote special and I thought I had read somewhere that the circles in the reticle were used to range coyotes? However I cant find anything in the instructions about this. Do any of you have experience with these scopes? Thanks!!

its not used to range coyotes, you have to either use a range finder or guess then use the appropriate circle. its calibrated to work with the 55gr bullets in either .223 or 22-250. the scope will have to be set on the highest power to make it work correctly.

I would do some range test with the scope and the ammo you use. The best method is trial and error for determining the hold over. Example... Zero at 100 then move to say 200 and 300 and see what using the cirlces do there. Trial and error

I have had my special for 6 months, once I got it sighted in at 200 yds top circle all other marks are right on. the scope will shoot accurate at 450 yds bottom circle, I have killed a load of coyotes with the scope although it took me about 20 rounds to get use to it, it is great for running dogs and you can get fur in the scope fast 200 yds and under.

Don't know if the OP is still looking this late in the game on this question, but yes you can use any multi-stadia reticle for rangefinding any tgt. size with varying degrees of accuracy, but none of those circles works great for say an 11 or 12" back to brisket winter-furred coyote. That particular reticle is somewhat complicated for RF'ing, but it could be calcd. for a decently accurate system requiring an angle that subtends more than 1 circle at optics highest power.

post is late but here it is.
have had coyote special for 2 years have killed a truck load of coyotes with it. make sure your large circle is dead on at 100 yds. 22-250 55 grn v-max will drop dogs at 400 yds all day long with little or no wind. keep the scope turned up 10 or better. this scope is great for moving targets.
