I am a big game hunter in Idaho and am looking to upgrade spotting scopes. Of course i am looking for great optics but also weight and length are of importance due to the hiking I do up steep mountians. My short list is the Leica 20-45x62 APO and non APO versions and the Nikon fieldscope III ED 20-45x60. Some reports I have read on the net state that the fieldscope ED falls between the Leica APO and Non APO versions which, if true, is quite an accomplishment at half the price.
I have also read that the APO version mostly enhances color definition and contrast which may not be a benefit for a big game hunter like myself. Is there truth in that statement?
Any personal experience with these scopes would be greatly appreciated.

I own an Leica Televid APO 77 and let me say it will spoil you forever. The
quality of the scope is unmatched, you can tell as soon as you look through the
scope why it cost so much. If you have the money don't look elsewhere as in my
opinion not one of the Japanese spotting scopes can compare to any scope in the
Leica Televid line.
The APO models are said to more or less give true rendition of colors and not introduce any false colors. |

TwoLaneBlackTop,
Thanks for your response. I too have always heard that the German glass is superior. That is one of the reasons why I was surprised to hear about the Fieldscpe III ED being rated so high.
We will see what the concensus is. Maybe those other threads were way off base.
Again, thanks for your response.

From what I have read, and I do not have any experience with them, the Zeiss Diascopes are very good, and cost effective too. The Diascope is ED glass (actually Zeiss calls it AOS, it has floride ions in it which is a further upgrade), and it and is very good glass). Bushnell also make scopes with ED glass that are in the $700 range.
